Topic Dog Boards / General / Half house training???

Hi, since i brought holly home xmas day the house training has been going vey strangely...... were now at a point where i find very few puddles in the house - most nights are one dry :) but the same cant be said for poo's, without any obvious signs she wanders into the hallway (i live in a flat so that is kind of towards the way out) and poos at the door.

I have tried following her and letting her out but, no matter how long we spend out there she wont go - she'll just wait until i bring her back in and nip out when im not looking lol.

I thought it might be a scent thing so the whole area has been bleached and disinfected (if it smells of dog now ill eat my hat) but still the same.

any suggestions?

Andy

sooo glad i found this board lol - would be knackered without it :D

Hi Andy
When you say you live in a flat - how far is it for you to get outside? Are you on the ground floor? Pups need to go quite often when they're tiny - she needs to go out on waking, after playing, after every meal, and probably at least every hour as well as at these times. If she is making her way to the front door, it does sound as though she is heading in the right direction. Watch out for the tell tale signs - sniffing around, circling, tail rising up, and pounce! Get her outside asap and wait with her until she performs, then make a huge fuss of her. She will get the hang of it eventually. In the meantime, have you thought of trying a crate? I found mine invaluable when Sparky was tiny, and he still sleeps in it (though with the door open now).
What breed is Holly, by the way?
Tracy
PS Some disinfectants hide the scent from humans, but perhaps not to Holly. I used to use water, a squirt of detergent and a splash of white wine vinegar as this removes the scent to the dogs, too (not sure where I heard of this one, now, but have read it somewhere).

she isnt that young a pup, she's 6 months, brought her home xmas day as she was being kept in a yard in the cold because they couldnt (or couldn't be bothered) to house train her.

yes i am in a ground floor flat so its no distance at all! Im quite lucky as i have front and back gardens so theres no problem with her getting there.

I didnt think it fair to crate her as i already have an ISBT who wouldnt be happy in a crate.

She is a westie btw

Think Ill give the vingar a go - never heard that before!!
