Hi all, what type of supplements do you give your dogs if any ? Anything that is particularly good for the skin and coat ?
Thanks.

Hi

I don't give any supplements specifically for the coat - a good diet, exercise, healthy dog and grooming should be sufficient :)

Please beware of supplements, if a good diet is given supplements should not be needed. Like most things vitamins and trace elements are essential in the correct amounts but if over done are harmful or even life threatening.

I give my dog Fish Body Oils as these are rich in Omega 3s which are lacking in dogs (and human) diets because of the amount of grain they/we consume, grain based oils and even meat is mostly grain fed.  Or you can give dogs fresh or tinned oily fish such as pilchards, mackeral and sardines.  Deficiency in this area can result in dry skin, hair and nails, it is also good for the brain :D

Hi,
I do agree that if a dog is healthy and has a good diet, supplements should not be needed.  Our collie, aged 11, has never had anything but her food, and still looks great.  On the other hand, our other dog (who is not yet 2), has had problems with hair loss due to allergy, so I do give him evening primrose capsules and Omega-Aid oils (available from the vet), which have worked wonders for his coat, and they are also really good for the skin.

Class oil as food not supplements but I may have missunderstood the original post.

Hi Jackie,
You're probably right - I just think of it as a supplement to the food because it's given separately, and it's not essential if a dog is on a complete diet and doing well.  Like I said, our older dog has never had anything added to her complete food simply because she's always been in great condition with never a thing wrong.

My schnauzer tends to have schnauzer pumps so the vet recommended evening primrose and omega oils. Seems to help quite a bit. I just wonder if he has to be fed them long term. Guess I'll ask the vet again.
