my puppy has decided that her new favourite food is raw onion... does this seem odd to anyone else ???

I have heard recently that, just like chocoalte, it is toxic to dogs!! So would not advise it, especially not too much of it!

Hi there,
Dogs do have some funny tastes but raw onion can cause haemolytic anaemia and shouldn't be given to dogs.

Don't let her have it! A (very) little will do her no harm but it can cause a lowering of the haemoglobin level in the blood.

My oldest boy who is 8 keeps pinching onions, its wierd but they must like them!
He also shredded home growing leeks!!!!!!!!
Keep the onions out of reach now if that is possible

Most things are a problem in excess, Chocolate especially dark chocolate is a no no and all pills should be kept out of the way, otherwise do not let the dog eat anything in excess. Grape skins and apple pips are a poison but the dog would need to eat a large amount to cause it harm. So OK, but not too much. Have to say mine eat loads of apples and the pips in most part go straight through, as they are not chewed, just swallowed.

500gms of raisins can kill a weimeriner sized dog! causes kidney failure. Affected dogs need dialysis to have a hope of surviving. trouble is not many people know this, and wont recognise the symptoms till its to late.

Wow, I didn't know that! Thanks for the info; I've just emailed my parents with it quoated. Our 13yr yorkie has kidney problems and I'm sure they give her raisons as a treat occassionaly - I doubt it caused her problem as that has other factors involved though, but don't want to aggreivate it further.

No one really knows what the cause is and if it is like a peanut allergy which can be lethal to some affected people. A Hungarian Vizsla in the UK died after eating 500g of raisins (1lb) which is a lot of ANYTHING to consume. If you are worried then don't feed grapes or raisins. I still feed my dog the occasional grape.

Isnt coconut mulch for the garden also toxic??
Cocoa mulch is toxic, but I've never heard of coconut mulch (and I do a fair bit of gardening). What is it like? I use coconut compost for potting (I don't use peat for environmental reasons) and coconut compost is an 'industrial' by-product (and plants have a terrific root-system). I guess you could use it as a mulch - but it's no more dangerous than your doormat (same stuff).
