Hi
my girl had to have a c section christmas eve
she only had one puppy although other breeders who saw her were sure she was having more .
still that diddint matter to me at least she had one puppy and she had somthing to take home that would make it all worth it.
when the vet got the puppy out and cleaned her up she brought him out and said he was large and healthy , i was over the moon .
about 45 minutes later she asked me to come through and bring molly round so i did it was horrible seeing her shivering and still bleeding alittle bit so i just cuddled her and reassured her evey thing was ok
i asked the vet if she had shown her the puppy she said no so i showed him to her not sure how she would react not having him normal .
she was great sniffing and licking him her little eyes lit up .
then the vet put him to the teat he wasint suckling so she started feeding him with a dropper she said i would have to continue to do so when i got home , i felt somthing was wrong and so i said you have checked him for cleft palate , yes she said he is fine ,i was int convinced so i looked and there as i thought cleft palate ! iwas so angry if she had checked from the start i would never have shown him to my little girl that will haunt me ! i cant stop crying thinking what must she be thinking i feel so very low . has any one else experienced this befor .

I am so sorry to hear what has happened :-(
Do you still have puppy or did you have him pts?
You could try to hand rear the pup by tube feeding as operations can be done depending on the severity of the cleft at a later date. To be honest tubing would be the only option as even dropper feeding milk can get on the lungs :-(

Hi
vet said it was to bad and best to put him to sleep , so bad that she diddint notice it .
i gave him a kiss and brought him home and put him to rest in our garden under the bird table so he will always have little visitors .
molly is doing fine milk all gone she looked a bit down yesterday so just made lots of fuss .
just cant help wondering what she must be thinking ?
and why has this happend we followed everything just cant understand .
people have said that with first pregnancey it can happen that they only have one puppy , but if only he would have lived it would have been a bonus as she would have had somthing to show .

I am so sorry about this great disappointment. I am glad Molly seems to be recovering well, I would like to say that when humans have an anaesthetic they are brought round in the recovery area and often have a chat with the nurses there but when asked the next day they can never remember it, I have had that experience myself, so I doubt very much that Molly will know that there ever was a puppy and once her hormones return to normal I am sure she will be as right as rain. :)

Oh lord I feel for you, it's a horrible choice to have to make, but I'm sure you did the right thing....just say a little prayer and look forward to her next litter.....

Oh Sarah, that is so sad. Sometimes these things just happen - life ain't fair. All you can say is that at least the dam is OK. Try not to let her see that you are upset, she is your priority now. Don't baby her too much, just act as you normally would ( with plenty of TLC of course) & help her get over it by keeping her mind occupied.

Sarah this happened to a freind of mine, one puppy, c-section and the puppy was deformed, a bad cleft palatte.
They did breed the bitch again and the second time got 5 healthy puppies so dont expect the worst in future.
I had a litter of 10 once and lost half of them to growth faults, future litters I fed folic acid and changed the stud dog, I have not had a cleft palatte or a malformed puppy since (touch wood)
all the best

Oh Sarah, I am so sorry for you and your little girl. A very similar thing happened to us a few years ago. The bitch had been mated to the most wonderful dog (I just loved everything about him) but she missed and so we returned the following season. Again we got a good mating and tie and she seemed well all the time. I have Cavaliers and generally they whelp about 60 days, if they go longer I start to worry and usually there is something not quite right. Anyway this bitch got to day 62 with no signs so I went to the vet who said that in spite of my feelings I shouldn't worry for another couple of days. He scanned her and said that he could see two puppies who both looked o.k. The following day she went for a wee and HORRORS a mass of black slime. I rushed her to the vet who performed an emergency section ....... the result one very very dead puppy and one very weak pure white puppy which died very soon after birth. My little girl has never recovered from that even though she did eventually have just one more puppy to a different dog. I only mated her again so that she could hopefully have something to love of her very own and it worked but I now think that firstly the lines did not gell which caused the problems and just maybe she was not meant to be a mum.
I do hope your little girl is feeling better, just show her heaps of love, if she know you love her she will recover. Good Luck.

Hi
thankyou for your reply i have spoken to alot of breeders now and all say the same thing that i should breed from her again .
i just worry that it will happen to her again and have to go through all that again . it was so heartbreaking to watch her little face christmas morning she had no puppy , but i must say she has come on leaps an bounds and we have our little girl back to her normal self .
my husband feels that we should breed from her again . how long should you leav it and how long will it be befor she is in season again she was normally every 6 months .
thankyou sarah & molly x

Hi Sarah, so sorry to hear about the birth, I can share your awful experience, my bitch had 5 pups. The first 3 were born dead, the vet delivered the 4th which he presumed was also dead and the last was nearly delievered by c/sect. I signed all the papers to give the vet the go-ahead and was advised to leave her for a couple of hours I was distraught. I went home and as soon as I got in the house the phone rang, I started to panic thinking something was wrong because they told me it would be a couple of hours, it was the vet, with good news or so they said! there was one pup left which they delivered using forcepts instead of carrying out a section, phew I thought. The bad news was they ripped its ear off. I couldn't believe it, I nearly cryed. Thank god one survived though I'd have been devastated if I put my girl through all of that for nothing. Kept the pup, she's brill, bigger than her mum now, she thinks she the boss but is soon put in her place. x

Mollymoles, in answer to your question, not everyone would agree but if she has fully recovered from her ordeal, I don't see why you shouldn't breed from her next season - if you decide to breed her again. Good Luck whatever you decide.

Hi Sarah
glad to hear that both you and Molly are getting back to normal after your ordeal. Only you can decide if you want to try again. Good luck whatever you decide.
