i have a 6month old gsd that is VERY hyper she never settles down and i am wondering if a change in diet might help she is on jwb and has been since 9 week old .i take her to training but she gets so hyped up she will not listen to me  can ANYONE help

I'm not an expert on nutrition but I do know that diet can contribute to the behaviour you mention.  Usually though I would expect this to be tinned food or the cheaper complete foods.  However if you do change her diet I would be very interested in the outcome because I have wondered about jwb and adolescent dogs for a while now.

Could be she is getting a too high protein, try putting her on a junior or adult food now.   It may be that she thinks she has you where she wants you and I would suggest that you spend most of the day ignoring her only give attention if you instigate it, if she comes to you turn round and walk away, if when you sit down she pesters you fold your arms out of the way turn round and show your back to her. The idea is to let her know that you call the shots and if she wants your attention she had better be attentive when you want her to be. If you go to play with her and she is not listening then walk away. What sort of training method are you using at training class, is it very formal, could be she is plain bored and you would do better trying a different sort of training. Would suggest clicker as I have had a good deal of success with it with difficult dogs that do not respond to negative training. But you would need to find a trainer to help you to start with.

Diet can be a factor in behaviour, certainly those that are mainly maize based.  What lines is she from?  GSDs bred from strong working lines are much higher drive than show/pet dogs and, like working gundogs, need to have their energies channelled in a constructive manner.

I would recommend you try Burns. I switched my GSD pup on to it at about 6 months. It's lower in protein than a lot of others, but is a good wholesome food. I also feed one meal of Dene's tinned which is also fairly low in protein. With the larger breeds I don't believe in a high protein 'fast growth' food anyway.

thanks everyone for your replies i have been thinking about putting her on burns but she isnt 6 months til 21 of this month . i take her to bagsds for training and was hoping to show her but she will not stand still long enough to show her full potential .i have tried ignoring her and walking away from her when she dosnt come when called but she just isnt bothered .when we go training her litter brothers and sisters are all in the same class all my girl wants to do is play which can cause a problem because all the other pups are really laid back and interested in training .she isnt interested in food or her toys when we go to training she just wants to have fun .she has lots of short walks and we try training at home i just dont know where she gets all her energy from  thanks again

When I wrote to Burns to say the kibbles were too small in their puppy for my dog and would they suggest I put it onto Puppy for large breeds they wrote back and said put him on Adult. They added that lots of pups have been successfuly reared on the Adult.
