I know that toy, miniature and standard are the three poodle sizes but ive just seen a website with a page on GIANT Poodles that apparently exist in the USA and ive also come across the MEDIUM poodle in my Bruce Fogle book that only lives in Germany, do these two sizes (giant and medium) exist and if so why arent they recognised by the KC??

You forgot teacup, to my mind far more of a worry.
As the KC recognise any poodle form under 11" to over 15" I think they do recognise them, depending on size they are called toy, miniture, or standard.

In the majority of countries there are 3 sizes of poodle. The Toy under 11" (or 10" in the states), the Mini under 15" and the Standard over 15". On the continent there is the Toy, Dwarf Mini and Standard. The Mini on the continent can be upto 18" (I think, haven't checked).
However, over in the States (where else!) they have created several new sizes purely as a marketing ploy. You have tiny toy and tea cup poodles which are basically very small toy poodles and sadly usually very very poorly constructed and unhealthy and really don't look like poodles at all. There is also the Royal poodle which is basically a very large standard.

Not in the UK though, only in the States! And even then, not in any breed standard. ;)

I don't accept the Royal or the teacup or tiny toy. All they are is oversized standards or undersized Toys. Remember these are just marketing gimmick names not for those who want a quality dog.

Is there a limit to standard poodle height then? I just thought anything over the Min height was standard.
I quite like the idea of the four sizes on the continent with the taller Mini, as over here there seems to be the toy and Mini, and then the datandards are much taller than the Mini. There seems to be nothing sort of Medium size, say 18 to 20.

Anything over 15" is a Standard, Brainless.
:)

Most standards though seem to be a lot more like 25 inches plus.

I often find it hard to work out how much of that is dog, and how much is coiffure! ;)

I agree Brainless have always felt there should be a size between our mini and standard. I somehow think that if anyone took a 16" 'standard' into the ring they'd be laughed at!
Jesse

I didn't realise that standards could be that small, that's smaller than a Spanish Water Dog, which is 15 to just under 20". I don't think I've ever seen a standard Poodle as small as 20" in the show ring. Oooh, you learn something new every day.
