Hi - can anyone offer advice? I took Rosie out for a run on New Year's Eve and the ground was really hard with frost. We played in the ploughed field which was a bit bumpy (she demands that I throw her stones that she never bothers retrieving!!), and suddenly she started limping - I don't think there was a wimper before this, although when she's excited, it sounds like she's shreaking a bit anyway!
She limped all the way home and couldn't straighten her paw to put it on the ground. This has since improved, although she's still limping, although not in an awful lot of pain (she still wants to play and brings her toys for us to throw).
The thing is, I've just felt a swelling behind her "wrist" on the back of the offending leg (her front right), just above where her dew claw is and above where her wrist join is. It feels a bit springy and is about the size of a 2p piece. When I press it, it doesn't seem to bother her, although she tries to pull her paw away half heartedly.
Can anyone tell me what she's done and what the best treatment is. I booked a vets appointment today, but cancelled it, as she was walking a lot better and I didn't want to bother them! I feel like I should probably have kept the appointment now, but didn't find the swelling until just now.
Thanks for any help and advice you can give me and Happy New Year to all you animal lovers!
Wendy

welcome to champdogs & happy new year to you.
I would take her to the vets. call them first thing tomorrow & ask for her to be seen tomorrow.
There's no way anyone from C/D's could say what she's done, just from your post, but I'd get her checked by the vet. :)
Not sure if you've been excercising her since this happened, but I'd try & keep her quiet & rest her leg until she's seen the vet.

Any sort of trauma to the dew claw and surrounding area can be very very painful. My own springer wouldn't put his foot to the ground the other day, throughout the day it became progressively worse so I booked an appointment for the next morning. He went off to bed feeling very very sorry for himself and was limping badly. When I came down the next morning I thought I was in the wrong house or at least had the wrong dog - nothing wrong at all! No limp, no pain or discomfort! (None of this was helped by watching Animal Hospital and seeing a SBT with a hairline fracture in his foot, my imagination ran riot and by bedtime I almost had him written off!)
If 24 hrs of rest show there is still a problem, or if you are concerned about swelling, etc then make sure you see a vet. Let's hope its just another mad springer being a bit too mad.
