Jetty gave birth last night to one huge boy. He is like his father ( smooth long-hair). We have finally named the other two babies Elayne and Gwayn ( from The Wheel Of Time :D) so this one will be Mat ( also from the Wheel Of Time).

Hi Kate
Congratulations. As a Guinea Pig person ( :D ) do you have any idea what the homeopathic remedy for eczema in a long haired guinea is?
Thanks

I'm not sure on the homeopathic remedy but when I bred them I sometimes used Oilatum in warm water to bathe them with if their skin got bad. There was one who had to use some really smelly stuff but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called!

I've got a long list of homeopathic remedies you can use on pets, but need to know what sort of eczema it is. Is it dry, wet, smelly or scabby? And what area is it affecting?

Kate,
Are you sure that it is eczema?? It could be mites, at first it can be difficult to tell the difference. Symptoms are itchy, scaly skin lesions and loss of fur over the lesions. Left untreated the animal will scratch until it bleeds. This is a serious condition as it can cause the Guinea Pig to lose condition and get really ill. The mites cannot be seen by the naked eye. The vet can give you something to clear it up.
Hope it is just eczema tho.
Regards

Kat,
Where exactly is the eczema on the guinea, as there are different conditions of the skin for different parts of the body. If the eczema is on the stomach, that can mean that the guinea pig is sleeping on a wet and dirty patch of straw or sawdust, and that is irritating the skin. What it also could be is that the guinea pig has a allergy to his bedding. I have a guinea pig (an Abbisissian) who can never have pine sawdust in her cage because she gets watering eyes and starts to itch. Good Luck.
Kate
P.S. What is the breed and name of your guinea? :D

Hi everyone
Thanks for your help. She's actually not my guinea, but my sisters. So I'm not very up on the breed, but she is a 'bad hair day' pig :)
The eczema is on her back, and is dry and flaky.

Hiya Kat, most likely cause would be mites, for which she would need to be treated by a vet with Ivomec, but if she's sure it's eczema then you could use Arsen. alb, or Urtica. Or you could try a herbal remedy, like Aloe vera, Kelp or Marigold. Also Beetroot juice is a good eczema calming remedy.
Hope that helps.
