Have you heard of this breed? It is a combination of a bernese mountain dog and maybe a newfie? I heard about it in a chat room but have not been able to find anything about it on the web.

It's not a 'breed' as such, but a cross breed - I think I read about them in one of the large doggie magazines a couple of months ago - was astounded to see them 'promoting' a cross as I can't see it breeding true. Don't be fooled by tales of them being 'rare' and therefore more expensive, it's just that no self respecting breeder would get involved with a planned mating - the dogs involved may have genetic weaknesses etc.....
Another, more old fashioned word for two breeds crossed together is mongrel - perhaps we should start using this whenever anyone enquires about them because that is what they are - check your dictionary.
Lyn, why not register and join in with the chat and let us knwo why you call yourself puppy.raiser in your email address?

Hi they also have border collie in them and cant personally see the reason for breeding them apart from money
Welsh Mountain Dog
Thats a bit harsh isn't it? Isn't that the way existing breeds were formed, by crossing different breeds together? I believe the welsh mountain dog is only bred so far by one person. I can't see there is a big problem with that. I personally think they sound lovely.

Hi I did say it was my personal opinion, but why this mix what does it achieve? A crossbreed .Why?aren't there enough ? What niche is it aimed at? A healthy pet any good breeder should be aiming to achieve that. They obviously arent registered so what about the hip score Border collies do suffer from hip dysplasia and Bernese and newfies are big heavy dogs. Also what about eye test as I do believe it will be possible for them to inherit problems from all the breeds involved as well.Gillian

Of course, you are right, hips, elbows, eyes and hearts will all have to be taken into consideration, the idea of a dog the size of a Newfi with a BC over active personality is enough to make every joint in the body collapse. In the past dogs were 'developed' to fulfil a need, usually by people with large premises and staff and a large number of dogs (100+) so that it was possible to produce a 'breed' breeding true to type within 60 to a 100 years, a single person with a dozen dogs would find it impossible and what would be the purpose, do they have very large sheep on Welsh Mountains?

I clicked the link and had a look at the site and they do look very nice - the name "Welsh mountain dog" makes me think of a working dog but the site describes them as pet/family dogs? - so they haven't been bred for a specific working role at all have they, why do they need to create new breeds?
I've noticed requests to find some really strange breed names appearing - is it the fashion to own a dog with the silliest breed name?;)

Took a look too one looks like a Newfi and one a BMD the rest look like BC crosses and none look alike enough to be called a breed.

I thought that too Jackie! hey maybe the farmers in Wales are starting to breed cow-sized sheep too? LOL
were all the dogs pictured supposed to be of the same breed?

Yep,
huge vicious things with enormous teeth. The Newfy in the breeding is obviously because it
rains so much here, so they have to rescue these enormous sheep from the floods, the Bernese to bring cartloads of supplies up the mountain - because the enormous sheep need so much to eat & the BC because they need so much energy to get these gigantic sheep to go where they are supposed to! :D
Seriously, has anyone seen any mention of health tests?
