We have a six month old lab bitch which i think is due to be wormed, the breeder i got her off wormed using panacur. Is panacur only available fron a vet?, if i don't use panacur are worming tablets from petshop's as good as those from a vet?. Am i right in thinking that after six month's of age you worm every 3 month's?

You just as well give smarties than worming preps from pet shops and supermarkets. You have to get them from your vet, Drontal Plus or Panacur are best. Every six months will suffice.

Hi Paul

It is a good idea to worm bitches about 8 weeks from the day they come into season.  The worms "move" during this time in a bitches cycle and it is the best time to catch them.

Panacur and Drontel and the best wormers which you can get from vets or agricultural merchants.  Like flea treatments if you want them to work don't get the ones from pet shops.

Hi Paul,

My year old Labrador, Poppy, nearly died after I used Drontal Plus (supplied by my vet). She had a very bad reaction to it and it was touch and go for a week. I don't know anything about Panacur but I certainly would never use Drontal again. (there are several posts on this board which have similar views to mine. If you do a search for Drontal you should be able to read various opinions). Obviously lots of people have used Drontal and had no problems but I thought it only fair to mention what happened with Poppy. I was devastated, having only had Poppy for 3 months when this happened. She's now 15 months and doing really well, but I'm not sure what course of action to take regarding worming her in the future.

Hope all goes well Paul,

Best wishes,
Val

Hi Val, you could try natural wormers instead, no chemicals or toxins :)

I can get Panacur quite 'cheaply' from our local farm supplies store.  Cheaper than the vets anyhow.

I worm every 3 - 4 months, is this too often?  But then again, that's what the vet recommends when I buy the stuff from them!!

Hi Christine,

Thanks for your reply. This seems like a very good idea to me and really I feel its the only option. I'm just too scared to use anything else. I wonder if anyone on this board has used natural wormers? If so I would be very interested to hear more - and also where I may obtain some reliable info.

Thanks again Christine; I really do appreciate your suggestion.

Best wishes,
Val :-)
