Hi
Is it possible to bring a puppy from the United States to the UK without having to go through the 6 months of quarantine. My husband and I are planning to fly out to the States to a breeder to have a look at some pups we are interested in but we are having problems trying to find out whether the above is possible. Has anybody done this and if so how????
Thank you in advance for any advice and help you can give
and Happy New Year

Yes it is possible, but the pup would not be able to come over until it was at least 10 months old, as it takes that long to go through the PET PASSPORT procedure.
Pup would have to be microchipped, and then Rabies jabbed (not normally done until 12 weeks). The it would have to have a blood sample taken at least 30 days later, and sent to one of a particular list of laboratories licensed to titre test the sample for the scheme. If the result comes back OK then the dog may enter the UK six months after the blood test. If it is not OK pup will need a further Rabies Jab and then blood test another month later until results satisfactory.
So rabies jab to chipped pup at 3 months, blood test at 4 months, plus six months wait = 10 months.
Someone in our breed was importing a puppy from Holland, and she didn't comein until over a year as blood tests and Rabies jabs had to be repeated. Obviously the breeder or some other person would have to be able to keep the pup for this length of time, and of course it would only be reasonable to have to pay it's board, which is likely to make cost similar to Quarantine, though of course the dog would have the benefit of socialisation.

Hi
Thank you so much for that. I guess that means that it might not be a good idea if the pup is already 10 months old by the time it comes over, it would already have developed its personality which we would want to go through with it and the training etc.
I will have to rethink the next step

Well I know that a lot of Irish Rescues transport puppies over on the ferry to find good homes over here. I'm not sure how young the restrictions are for (if there are any), but these pups range from 8 weeks upwards. :) Ruby came over on the ferry too, but she's SLIGHTLY older than a pup *lol*

there's no restiction in taking a puppy to ireland, one of our pup's went to ireland this year and travelled back by ferry, but pup must stay in car,at all times whilst aboard.

Or in a crate :)
so is it better to go by ferry hoping to fly over as when i am going over to pick up pup my dad will be going on business also so we are going to do two trips in one and also airport is only 40 minutes away from our house so thought it would be easy as going by ferry and then driving would take about 3 days
thanks

Sounds a very expensive way of getting the dog you want to me Jane!

ctually John, its fairly cheap on the ferry. There are a few people who transport dogs over for rescues and I've been told it costs roughly £60 per crate. You have to be very careful of who you use though. :)
Edited to add: A footpassenger return ticket would only cost about £20. That and the crate, less than £100. If you go by car, its about £200 return.

Hi Gina,
I'm sure we've spoke about this before as I'm just outside Belfast myself and wanted my pup from the mainland. It's always been ok to bring dogs back and forth without a problem (plants and meat are a different matter tho).
When I was looking to get a pup over most of the airlines I tried wouldn't transport animals and the ones that would can only take them once they have reached 12 weeks :(
Whereabouts are you getting the pup from? Maybe the breeder would be prepared to meet you at the ferry port so you could travel as a foot passenger and collect it? When I got Dizzy it cost about £40 return as a foot passenger and she stayed in a cage with me on the way back. There was no extra charge for having her with me but obviously she couldn't go into the eating areas etc. The ferry does have a few cages on the car decks for keeping bigger dogs in but they are allocated on a first come first served basis, although I don't thnk they cost any extra :)
When are you hoping to get her?
hi could you possibly pm the names of airlines who said that they could take pup at 12 weeks
cambridge and dad is coming with me as he has some business to do so we are staying in cambridge for the weekend visiting museums then we are picking up pup no dates set yet or anything will have to talk to breeder
