Topic Dog Boards / Health / Healing time after op

My dog had an op three months ago for a badly dislocated hock and a small fracture which was pinned.
He has made a good recovery but when he stands he lifts his 'injured' leg as if it is sore or tired. He's fine when walking but does get a wee bit stiff after getting up.
The Vet did say he wouldn't be 'fully healed' until the New Year. I don't expect he meant one minute after midnight(!) but it is worrying me that he hasn't fully recovered yet.
Has anyone had any experience of this kind of injury and of the recovery period?
He is only 1 year 5 mths old and I can't bear the thought of him having a problem leg for the rest of his life as he is such a happy and active dog.
Any advice and reassurance would be really gratefully received.

Thanks!

Liz

Hi,
Be patient with the poor little thing. He may not be used to using that leg.
Imagine the pain if it were you. It would take awhile to use the limb. The poor animal has no idea why this happened. Give the poor animal a chance.

Thanks! You are quite right! I'm probably being impatient but I am a worrier as well!!!!!!!!

He probably is still a little stiff & sore & it probably aches when he's tired, but he may also have got into the habit of not putting his weight on that leg because it hurt him to do so. Also it will take time to build up the muscle he hasn't been using. Once he's fully recovered he'll forget all about it.
Why don't you take him back to the Vet, just for a check up & to ease your mind?

Take him swimming twice aweek.
