My own opinion (and that of my breed club) is that no bitch should be mated before she is 2 years old, should have at least one season free between litters, and should have no more than 4 litters in her lifetime, with the last litter born before she is 8 years old.

thanks jean
thats what mum says they should miss a season and i no she has told this woman but like everything she says to her gose in one ear and out the other. its the bitch i feel sorry for. the other thing that makes me made she dose not care who the pups go to, i no from the last litter she sold 2 male pups to a 19 year old lad, who said he wants to put them as stud dogs and charge 500 as he knows people with rottie bitchs.
it makes me sad to see the breed i love so much being bred so badly and i can see them be band like the pit bulls in years to come, God i hope im so wrong,

Wow
8 seems pretty old to be having a litter JG . lthough I'm sure there are some evil people who breed even later than this :(

If a bitch is fit and well then 8 is not old for a litter in exceptional circumstances with prior application and veterinary approval the KC will register a litter from a bitch of this age.

The KC only brought in the upper and lower age limits for all bitches quite recently.

It is not unusual 8in some breeds in other countries for quite old bitches to have litters, but usually this is for specific reasons.

I know one breeder who will mate a bitch when young and then folllow the offsprings health until full maturity when she will have a second litter at around 7 years of age.  She will only7 use an oldeer stud on a young bitch and vice verasa so hoping to minimise healoth issues that may only become apparent later in life.

Her line seems to be particularly long lived.

Hi Lel - the KC won't generally register litters born to bitches after their 8th birthday (quite a recent regulation) in an attempt to stop bitches being bred from till they dropped. Of course, 8 is far too old for a first litter, but in many breeds a bitch is in her prime at that age, and a second or third litter while she is 7 years old is not a problem in the slightest.

My personal view is that 3, 5 and 7 are the best ages for a brood bitch to have litters.
