my 14 year old dog(lab x) has gone off her food will not eat any type of dog food has also gone off fresh chicken, freshfish. Is eating very little and when she does she vomits also stools vary loose. Had blood tests today showed nothing wrong. Vet has put her on a lite diet no red meat i.e chiken&fish(but will not eat).

I'm sorry to hear about your old girl being off her food. My oldie (also 14yr) is becoming more fussy too :( I usually find that something smelly like Sardines or Butchers Tripe tinned food added to her complete food, helps tempt her appetite :)

Good Luck

I'm so sorry to hear about your oldie - I know what its like to worry over them!   Has the vet taken any xras - to rule out a blockage?    How long has she been refusing food - is it likely that she has eaten something she shouldn't have - like our old lady and half a chocolate orange??    If this is a possibility, I would starve her for a day - just give her fresh water - syringe some in, if necessary - then tomorrow evening, I would poach some minced chicken in water with a carrot & a clove of garlic added, then rmove the mince, cook some rice in the liquor, and feed her just a few spoonfuls of this - then feed her twice daily for a couple of days - just small meals (a couple of tablespoonfuls at a meal) - and also give her a spoonful of live yoghurt (just to rebalance the bacteria in the gut).

Hope this helps - we do worry about these oldies, don't we - but they are worth it!!

Regards
Margot

Does she like treat? Just a thought but could you make healthy treats for her then she may eat. Taz has gone off his food at times he's 10 but usually is eating fine by the next day.....Just wondering maybe her teeth are bothering her and hurts her when she eats.....How about food that she can pretty much lap up if this may be the reason. Good luck and do hope she gets better.

Sorry to hear about your old girl, you could try some lightly scrambled eggs. As suggested by Margot you could make a chicken stock, I use a whole chicken(or pieces) rather than mince, you will get a more nutritious broth from it, your getting the minerals from the bones & I find it more economical, especially with a large breed like a lab :) Try to tempt her with this liquid, you can also make the same kind of stock from fish. You can freeze the meat from deboned chicken/fish till she gets her appetite back.

Sorry about your oldie, I find that Nature Diet is good to tempt the appetite. It comes in a good choice of flavours.

My first port of call would be pilchards in tomato and a chicken cooked in lots of water taken of the bone and liquidised to a thin soup and given to the dog in small amounts every hour or so. Vets can also give an injection to increase the appetite.
