I have a GR puppy who is now 5 months old. She really doesn't like going for walks. I live on a busy main road but we tried to get her used to the traffic before we took her out, She just wants to rush back to the security of home. How do I deal with this. If we do get her to the park she is really unhappy and when we start going home she tries to run back. Also she will only go to the toilet in her own back garden even if she is crossing her legs in desperation. Any ideas would be helpful.

she might be better if you can take her out with another dog-if you know of anyone with a friendly one----good luck, hope shhe gets over it.
I've got 2 litter brothers (Staffs) and they're now nearly 6 mths. One of them is only just getting to like going for walks, the other can't wait! It's really all just boiled down to months of patience to encourage and cajole Marmaduke to begin to enjoy walking. Even with his brother Beetle and their mum getting totally excited about walking, Marmaduke will only just now walk out of the house voluntarily without us having to carry him outside and place him on the ground when we put his lead on. The other 2 would literally drag us out of the house given the opportunity!
Just keep up the hard work and hopefully all your patience will pay off. Good luck!

I had the same probably with Molly (she's now just over 7 mths) until we moved to a quieter area with less noise. She would literally run away from the lead when she saw it coming out and I would end up carrying her to the park, where she would be fine before racing back home.
She's now like any other dog - where you can't even say the word 'walk' or 'out' or 'lead' or even go near the lead cupboard or your shoes without her going mad. It just talk lots of patience. She still gets a bit spooked sometimes and tries to climb up my legs, but I just tell her that everything is ok and act as if I haven't heard the plane or whatever it is.
As for the only going to the toilet at home, I've been told this is also perfectly normal in puppies and you should enjoy it whilst it lasts - you'll nedd that pooper scooper before you know it!

Hi there
coud you maybes try taking her into the front garden to try and get her used to the noise of the traffic, and just sit with her, and reward her with treats for sitting patiently with you. And once she is happy to sit out front, hearing the traffic whizzing past and getting treats, then progress outside,.... and again keeping her tempted and walking forward with tidbits and talking to her and reassuring her all the time (a bit like the donkey getting lured with the carrot).
I had this bother with my Basset. He'd see his lead coming out and run and hide in his crate, and then once I got him outside, he'd lay down and refuse to walk.
I had to get him a harness so I could gently lift nad pull him along without hurting him, and luring him along with treats almost every step of the way.
He still runs and hides when the lead comes out but once it is on him, he loves his walks. He's even progressed to a collar now and is willing to walk as he loves it so mucy.....I just dont understand why he still hides when the lead comes out ?? Habbit maybes??
For our Jack Russel, who is seeing a behaviourist, we were taught that when he is pulling forward, we are to click his half choke collar, and then sort of lead him back around to heal, and then to walk on. This enforces that the more they are pulling, the longer it is going to take...or that they pull, and don't get anywhere fast. But again, reward instantly everything she does that you want.
This is what we have learned and has proved positive with our dogs.
Good luck :)
