I have a westie who is coming up on a year old and is great.  I have thought about getting another dog but was looking at a big breed.  I love german shepherds and bull mastiffs but would they get on with a westie.  I also have kids we have a german shepherd in the family but he was rescue and hates any small dogs  and my westie comes first I'd rather he be on his own. They would be bought from pups.

If you get the new dog as a pup they should be no problem.

Dogs of all sizes normally get on but you will have to be firm on a larger dog as sometimes they will forget they are bigger then they are when playing!!

I have a 9yr old Westie & had a rough collie who died in April aged 8. We got a Rough Collie pup in October at 8wks old, it took a couple of weeks for the westie to accept the new pup,now they are the best of friends. If you go ahead keep an eye on them till you are sure there will not be any problems. I would like to wish you lots of luck with the new puppy if you decide on one. Reassure your Westie at all times he is still top dog

ps Meant to say we have a puppy pen for overnight & to feed Amy the pup so Rosie doesn't steal puppy's food. They both get treats at the same time
