Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Humping Mastiff

I have a one year old Mastiff that loves to hump my daughter's teddy bear! It is kind of funny to watch, but last night he tried my leg. He laso did it to the towel I was using to dry him with after his bath. Once I started drying down there, he started humping. Then, he went into the other room and did it to his bed. Still, that wasn't enough for him and he ran into the living room and got it on with one of my cats. Yesterday, I found him humping the teddy bear agian. When I told him no, he found the other male Mastif and humped him. My Mastiff is 37 inches tall and weighs 257 pounds! This is a funny sight! Well, the other male submissed and rolled over on his back. Then the humpy one jumped on top of him and humped him while he was still on his back. This same thing happend when I had a Holloween party. Right in front of everyone! He also does this strange ting of lying on his back and rubbing his privates with his front paws! What do I do?

Seems to be managing ok on his own without you doing anything ;)

I think you do need to correct this behaviour mainly because you don't want him to make a habit of humping humans.  This is a pure dominance thing and he is trying to assert himself by doing it - it has little to do with sex but having said that, sex is a domination thing with dogs because only alpha is allowed to breed.  Should he attempt to do it to humans then a lot of verbal telling off should reinforce the fact that its not appropriate behaviour.

Forgot to add that it proved that its domination because you said the other male rolled onto his back, the humpy one has obviously got strong dominant tendancies because he continued to reinforce himself even when the other dog had rolled over.  If not corrected this behaviour could get worse and the dog could get delusions of granduer and think of himself as top!

"When I told him no, he found the other male Mastif and humped him"

You obviously did not use the right tone when you said no. Unless you mean it and that means you need to stop finding it amusing, he will continue to ignore you. Your choice.

Sorry I was flippant, did not think you saw it as big problem, it is normal adolescent behaviour all mammals practice the mating process and if you don't like it stop it, particularly if it is directed at children or adults, teddy and other dogs will take care of them selves. If you think you may wish to use the dog at stud when he is older do not be too heavy handed about it as I have know that put a dog of mating, not common but it does happen.

EDIT to say: he will grow out of it when he matures, but with a large breed that may be 2 to 2 and a half years.

Easy, When you don't want to breed him get him neutered as soon as possible. Its anoying to other people. I do not want to get humped on a leg from a dog.

IMO a very narrow view  point, what about the dog?

Don't go to Alldogs house then  :D

Not all males have to be neutered to stop humping. My dane stopped with discouragement and hasn't done it since. And a lot of neutered dogs I have seen suffer from being humped by other dogs who can't work out what they are...are you going to get them all neutered aswell? :) Its normal behaviour for an adolescent male :)

THIS IS A PI** TAKE ALLDOG HAS WROT ANOTHER LIKE THIS WELL FIND IT AND READ FOR YOUR SELF BUT TO ME I THINK THIS PERSON IS GETING OFF ON WRITING THINGS LIKE THIS SAD OR WHAT (PI*** TAKE AT US MYBE DONT NO)
BUT IF THIS IS FOR REAL WELL BE KIND AND PLACE YOUR DOGS WITH OWNERS THAT CAN CARE FOR MASTIFFS AND GOLDIES AND DONT OWN A DOG AGAIN SICK PERSON

Well must say that was my original thought, but after recent events though I had better take it at face value. Because what the person is describing is normal adolescent behaviour all it needs is a proper owner to take control of the situation, castration should not be needed and would not be likely to cure a behaviour that once learned would change from being sexual to a game but would still be a nuisance to people and other dogs.

Rottiemad,

I tend to agree with you in that this is a pee take from a very sick minded person.  I read Alldogs other thread and it only confirmed my thoughts.  I wish I hadn't bothered replying now.

The two posts (neither of which the poster has returned to ) have subject matters suggesting to me that the writer is perhaps a young man who has not been able to get a girlfriend ;)

If no one had replied the posts would now be well down the active posts list..........blow now I've gone and added to it! :D
