Preggers bitch water broke 1/2hr ago. She's not pushing, was advised to do c section. Have a choice as to 2 vets, my usual, who usually spays during c section, and another vet, who doesn't. Who should I go to? I would really like at least one more litter out of my prize bitch. How great is the risk to her if I don't spay????

I work for a vet and unless it is absolutely nec. we never spay during a C-section...because the blood loss is so great. Its just not as healthy.
So I would go to the vet who won't spay....especially since you want another litter out of her...but go with your gut instinct on this one....whoever you trust more.
Just my thoughts...hope it helps

Is your bitch distressed?
Is she contracting?
half an hour isn't long from when her waters broke - to discussing a caesar.
most vets won't give oxytocin until a bitch is in established labour, but I'd have thought the best thing to do is sit with her & be patient, I'm sure she'll get going soon.
Obviously if she's in distress, that's a different thing altogether.
I totally agree with Cinajella - if a bitch is spayed at the same time as having a ceasar it can be dangerous, sometimes it has to be done ie ruptured uterus, but under normal circumstances I wouldn't spay at the same time. Just my opinion. x
hope she's okay.

Did the vet give the bitch oxytocin? They usually do that first then talk about c section. I find it very odd that your regular vet spays at the same time as doing the c section. It is usual for a vet to discuss the options with the client and if the client expressly forbids such an action then the vet should not do that operation.
I was told that a c section halves fertility each time one is performed. So my bitch who had one very large puppy, then never had any more, even though I mated her three times to different dogs.

c-sections are common in my breed.
I have been asked if I wanted my bitch spayed during the c-section and I refused. Your Vet needs your authority to spay, even if there is some problem that requires spaying he should ask you first. Otherwise you could sue.
I have never found that c-sections have altered the fertility of my bitchs although I have heard it can.
For instance one bitch had 3 sections and her litters contained, 9, 8 and another 9. Another had 10, 8 and 8.
all the best with your girl. Let us know what you get.

Hi I found that when I had a bitch spayed during a c section, it caused her milk to dry up, and obviously this was bad news for the puppies, even if I wanted a bitch spayed I would wait till the puppies are gone. A few people I know had the same experience! :)

48hrs without sleep is not fun!!
Ok, well apparently my usual vet and I had a bit of a misundertstanding.....my girl was in primary labour for just over 27hrs, he was concerned that if we had dead pups and infection he would have to spay, but all he said was "I'm probably going to spay her when you come in." So of course, I PANIC.
So I called the other vet, and he tells me he's not doing emergencies right now..so I had only one choice, I rushed to my regular vet, who had a chat with me first and assured me that he would only do a spay to save her life.
And at 4:30am this morning, we welcomed 6 strong healthy babies into the world in one mad rush, (my father and I were drafted as assistants), as well as an intact uterus :) Thank you guys for you advice and support, now I'm going to admire my babies........and get some sleep a little later hopefully!!

Sorry I didn't explain properly in my last messages, because of the length of primary labour, no advancement in labour after all that time, and then her water breaking with NO visible contractions or bearing down on her part, both vets recommended a c-section emergency. She was just too tired after all of that to push them out.

If any vet told me that "I'm probably going to spay her when you come in." (Without giving a very good reason) then I would answer, "If you do then I will certainly sue!" The dog is yours, the choice is yours, the vet is working for the person who is paying the bill, YOU!
