I am sick of my high phone bills with BT. How do I go about ending my contract with them and what do you suggest I use? I looked at one-tel who seem good as they do a package with cheaper landline to mobile calls included. Any other recommendations please?

Do you mean landline or mobile?

If you mean landline, we have a Telewest contract, we pay £25 per month and pay only for premium rate, or mobile calls, all the rest are free for as long as you want, no cut off after 1 hour!

Like you, I was fed up with my BT bills - I had every package on offer that was "supposed" to save me money, but I was still paying £65 per month for my bills - which I couldn't really check properly because of the complicated way the bill was set up.
In July, I switched to One-tel - I had two packages, one £13.99 per month gives me unlimited local and national calls - and calls to my daughter in Hong Kong at 7p per minute as against 35 per minute off peak with BT; the other costs £9.99 and gives me evenings (6.p.m.-8.a.m.) and weekend free internet connection! I then have to pay BT for my line rental (which is I think £10 per month(?). The maximum I have had to pay One-Tel in a month has been £45 - which included a lot of calls to Hong Kong - plus calls my son was making to mobile phones when he had his mobile stolen! I've now also got my mobile phone from One-Tel, but haven't had it for a month yet.
It was so easy to do - I did it one evening by phone, and arranged for it to happen in 2 weeks - phoned BT & they made all sorts of excuses - it was going to cost me more etc etc - but it certainly hasn't. I can check my bills on line very easily & pay by DD monthly!
At the end of the first year, I should get credited with 3 months' free rental - so can't be bad! I thoroughly recommend One Tel.
Regards
Margot

if you go with one-tel you still need a land line supplyed by bt or cable they are good value but ntl offer a good deal for 25 for all calls to landline numbers and just a charge for mobiles and preimium rate call but mobiles are cheaper we swapped a few months ago because of high bills ours have halved since we joined ntl

Thanks for the info. It's so hard to compare with the complicated tariffs on offer. I don't have a mobile, but the kids use the landline to dial out to mobiles and they cost a bomb. Telewest and one-tel sound promising.

So Margot or anyone avtually who may know if you sop to onetel then do you have to change your ISP provider if you are with btopenworld? (like I am)
Sounds good though.

Because of where we live, a cable connection just wasn't an option for us, which was why we opted for One-Tel. As for Internet access, yes - you get a new dial-up number & one-tel becomes your intel provider - and I've had fewer problems in dialling up than I used to with Tiscali. I have found one downside however.... for some reason I have absolutely mucked up my Internet Express settings (can't get them in the right order, or I've left out one vital bit of information or something ;( ) so I can't use my new email addy BUT I can still access my emails through the Tiscali webpages, using my old email address. Accessing through the webpages does mean that I can't put on the usual screens, so I have to wipe out about 50 emails a day inviting me to see Paris

!
As I'm off for the next week, one of my aims is to get all this sorted out properly - along with a massive clear up....hmm - might be a trifle optimistic!

One tels isp is very good we had it for over a year but ntl do a broad band for 17.99 just slightly more than onetel charge for dial up service worth looking into if you are online a lot also you only need the one phone line as it doesnt tie up your phone line and you dont need to have there tv package or phone package you can just opt for the broad band although we have phone and broadband and its still cheaper than bt

But we still need another 35 people in our area to indicate that they want broadband before we can get it :(
Keep telling anyone I know who has a phone line to sign up......

Margot just remind them they don't have to sign up just indicate they are interested.
It worked for a friend of mine they eventually got lots of people to indictate interest in their village but to date 3 months later only 14 have taken it up :)
