Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / cost of cairn terrier puppy

how much should i expect to pay for a cairn terrier puppy, kc registered. I have seen some advertised for £250, some in wales for £300 -£410 and one nearer home for £500 which has champions in his pedigree. This seems a bit high but i would not have to travel to buy and any problems the seller is nearby. Cairns seem to be very scarce and i wondered what i should do - bite the bullit and buy more expensive nearer to home or wait for cheaper to come up -Thank you Rob Fraser

Anything ...whether it is a dog or a piece of furniture , is only worth what you want to pay for it IMHO

I would say that the £500 one is overpriced simply because it is a fair bit over the price of the others...but then you need to look at what you are getting for your money...the breeding that has gone into the pup , the after care that you can expect to get etc etc

The fact that one pup has Champs in its pedigree means not a lot unless the champs are its dam and sire ...AND you are wanting to show it .

If you contact the kennel club or one of the breed clubs in your area they will let you know who has pups for sale. You can then visit to see if you are happy with the way the pups are being raised and if the breeder has a pup available that they would let you have then ask the price. IMO if you are happy with the set up and there is a puppy available and you can afford it then put your name on it.

You could travel to Wales to find the pups being raised in poor conditions or on a puppy farm, even though they may be cheaper you would turn round and come home so in fact there is nothing so expensive as an unsuitable puppy.

If you join the board and let us know where about you live we could give you the contact number of your nearest Cairn Club. Not being in the Cairn breed I don't know the going rate but would have thought between £400 & £500 would be about right, £250 too little and would think it may suggest poor breeding although sometimes it is a novice breeder who has just taken a litter from their pet bitch and have not worked out the costs of doing it, so if you know what you are doing you may pick up a bargain in that way but you would need to know the lines that the pup had been bred from and be able to assess how correct the breeding bitch is.

Don't know if that is of any help but as I said join us and we can try and help you find a puppy, you may find someone listed here on Champdogs will have puppies available but we would still suggest you visit and make sure the way the pup is raised satisfies your requirements.
