Topic Dog Boards / Health / Update On Cherry Cavalier
- By sami Date 15.12.03 20:02 UTC
Hi
Prompted by the good news about Donna's Charlie, I thought I'd post an update on Cherry, too!

Our vet, great that he is, couldn't really do anything else for her, back in September, as everything they gave her was causing other problems.

Anyway, we took her to Chris Day on October 13th. She had laser acupuncture, chiropratical alignment, and a selection of homoeopathic remedies. She had/has Leukaemia, enlarged spleen, a heart murmur, colitis, arthritis, and was getting incontinent when asleep. She also stopped eating.
I embarked on a tiring round of nursing, washing, spoon feeding, cooking chicken every other day, etc etc....

In the last 9 weeks, since our first visit, we have seen the her getting better week after week. My husband went abroad for nearly 3 weeks during late October early November, and noticed how well she was when he returned.
She has now visited Chris Day 3 times in all. She's had her remedies changed slightly, and in the past 2 weeks, she's now eating her normal NatureDiet, her colitis has stopped, her incontinence has stopped, she's walking, running, skipping and jumping, and looks better than she did even a year ago, before we realised what she had wrong with her!!

She's also off all her conventional medication.

There have been times over the last 6 months when we thought she was on the way to The Bridge...and my regular vet had said it seemed like she'd given up.

Glad to say, she's still very much here, and is enjoying herself again!

Don't know how long for...we're not going to even get her blood tested to see how the leukaemia is progressing...(no point, as we have said we won't give her chemo)..we will just carry on enjoying her enjoying herself, until she doesn't want to any more!

So, Merry Christmas from Sami and Cherry!!

I wanted to bring a heart murmur topic back up to the top to see if anyone has any help/advice?

My sister has got a 9 week old Cavalier puppy, maybe not bought from the best of establishments (I'll say no more but I have told her it was probably a puppy farm or the pups have been bought in to sell).  She is a lovely, bright, mischievious puppy, quite small but nevertheless full of fun.  She was suffering with an upset stomach yesterday and then passed some blood so we took her to the vets where it was diagnosed she has a heart murmur.  Now I know that the breed is prone to them but is this going to be a problem especially as she will be spayed after her 1st season.

The vet that checked Tinkerbelle said that a referral to the Royal Dick or Glasgow vet schools would probably be of benefit.   My sister is now looking at the pup thinking she's going to keel over at any moment.

She was given Synulox for the upset tum and also worm tablets as we doubt she's ever been wormed.  :(

Thanks.

At as young as 9 weeks it could still be an inocent developmental murmer that will not be there in a few weeks time.

I think vets are spotting more murmers in very young pups with the earlier vaccination protocols, with jabs at 8 and 10 rather than 2 weeks older.

That said Cavaliers are one of the breeds with known heart problems.  I would treat the pup normally and watch for any other signs of hert problems, such as excersise intolenrance, breathlessness, coughing etc.

She should go back at about 16 weeks to see if a murmer can still be heard, and if so then get a specialist referal, as they wohn't be able to do anything just yet treatment wise anyway, if at all.  Up until that time she shouldn't be in any danger management wise, as a pup of that age won't be overexcersised etc.

Hi

One of my cavaliers was found to have a murmur when the breeder took her for a check at her own vets before I collected her.
Breeder offered to let me have a different puppy, but as I'd already visited and got to know Jasmine, I said I'd take her, as she was much wanted, and I'd been waiting for her birth, and would be much loved, murmur or not.

Happily, by the time she had a check at my own vet,a few weeks later, the murmur had completely vanished, never to reappear.

Try not to worry too much, just go along with what your vet recommends.
I've had 8 cavaliers in 25 years....4 of which developed murmurs....only 1 ever needed medication for her heart.

Thanks Sami,

Denise has been desperate to have another dog since Louis, her ESS died 4 years ago and yesterday I think everything got to her, hype of Christmas Day and then Tinkerbelle having such an upset tum.   Hopefully when she reads yours & Brainless replies, it'll help cheer her up!   :)

Thanks Brainless,

Having spoken to my sister today, she says that Tinkerbell is even more lively than she was yesterday, I'll pass on your comments just to cheer her up, I think she knows she has probably bought a puppy farm puppy but she could not send her back to an uncertain future.
