My bitch is 60 days. She has been digging on and off in the whelping box all night. She has refused breakfast but will eat odd titbits. she has also been a bit sick. Not long ago she went for a wee and some water gushed out. Her temp was 98.4 but has been up and down all week. Other than that she is fine. No panting or straining just moans of general disconfort due to her size. How long do you reckon before labour is due to start.

Sounds like lift off to me,but this could go on for a while they usually wait till earlys hours (well mine do anyway) dont worry till she starts panting and then straining,if she strains without any being born thats when you start to worry but I'm sure she will be fine.Have you got everything ready?
Do you have a book handy,I always have My Labrador book By Mary Roslyn Williams handy great section on whelping in that, and everytime I whelp a litter its still like the first time, some people keep records of whelpings then they can refer back but I dont breed very much anyway.
Good luck keep us informed

like what mattie said it all go,it was her waters breaking,if there a white murcus like string thats another, sign, good luck, what breed have you got,let us all know how mum and pups are.

Hi Star
My bitch went nearly 48 hours scratching around, not eating etc,I was shattered so I would hate to think how she was.
Best of Luck with the birth.
As soon as she starts straining give her an hour then if nothing give your vet a ring, might be a good idea to let them know you have a bitch in labour, just in case.
Dont forget to report back will you.

Hi Sue,
Is this the bitches first litter? I was under the impression that you had bred litters before?

We have had 2 litters before and it is this bitch's 2nd litter. The reason I was asking is that she is behaving differently this time then before.
For those who don't know the bitch is a GSP.
We do have books as well, and they are kept to hand. They are the book of the Bitch and the Whelping and Rearing of puppies.
