Topic Dog Boards / General / To immunise or not?????
- By Joanna [gb] Date 25.12.03 08:22 UTC
My problem is whether to have my Staffie puppy immunised every year she has had her puppy injections. My cocker spaniel died earlier this month with luckemia( cant spell) he must have had it for a while, he had some lumps removed in august and was not right since then, he was only ill for 24 hours then died of liver failure, i miss him so much. He was only 8 years old and always had his injections every year, but always seemed to be ill with one thing or another. My Dad had a westie which only had his puppy injections and he lived a healthy life to the grand old age of 19 years. I know it might be just bad luck but, I want whats best for Maisie. People i have talked to say booster injections are a money making racket for vets yet others say they are essensiel HELP!!!

Hi, its been discussed on here quite a lot, if you put boosters into the search option you`ll find loads of info to read thru :)

Hi Joanna,
I'm so sorry you lost your Cocker Spaniel. My last Springer only had puppy jabs and lived very healthily to 14 years and my present girl who is  6 yrs and healthy, has only had puppy jabs too. Just my opinion, but I feel that they do more harm than good. As Christine says there has been lots of debate recently on here and you could do a Google search too.

Thank Kath
I think you are right. Iam just going to leave it at her puppy injections. Its just hard making the right dissission sometimes. You're little girl sounds adorable. May she continue to bring you many years of happiness. Love Jo x

Hi Jo,
If you are feel that strongly about it, but aren't sure, you could actually have a blood test done - think it's called titre testing - which will show whether the immunity level is high enough or not.  Next time my dog is due for his vaccine (July), I will be having this done - costs about the same as the injection.  The only one I'm not sure about is lepto.

Hi Sunbeams
can I just ask why you are unsure about lepto???
Gus is due his annual boosters soon
- By John [gb] Date 26.12.03 11:24 UTC
Lepto does need boosting. If your dog is likely to to be at risk then you really do need this boosted if nothing else. Also be aware that if you show or work your dog then one thing that you are signng when you enter is that your dogs are up to date with boosters.

John,

Many boarding facilities also require proof of up-to-date boosters.

What happens if people have had their dog titred & the results come back high antibodies, therefore proving boosters are not necessary?
Isn`t it about time the need to booster before going into kennels is changed?

I believe some kennels accept certificate of nosodes instead.

Same with insurance, it's time that changed too. They don't usually cover boosterable illnesses if boosters haven't been given, which will pressurise some folk into boostering annually. Yet I wonder how much they have to pay out for vaccine related illness.

Do any of the insurance Co's accept certs of nosodes?     Alternatively, couldn't they  just accept a good titre result?
