Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / still bleeding at day 13
- By jrtfan [us] Date 24.12.03 13:43 UTC
My friends jrt bitch, who is two and they are trying to mate for the first time.  Is still bleeding (very slightly - mostly just detectable with a blot) at day 13 and will not stand.  Certainly, it is a lighter color than early on, but seems to not changed in color in 3 days.  I was under the impression (I do not own a bitch) that it is usually totally *clear* before she will stand.. the other concern they have is that she is just playing hard to get.. they starting to get a bit concerned since it is day 13 now...

IMO, if she's not standing, then she's not ready. I had a bitch who stood for her first litter at day 13, but not till day 18 for her second litter. And she showed colour all through her seasons. Is her vulva really soft and flabby? If not, she's not ready yet. Separate them and try her again tomorrow. If she's really not interested she will get very angry with him and, if he has a nice temperament (and you wouldn't want to use him if he hadn't) then he'll be put off completely.

Dont take too much notice of the colour - some bitches bleed right the way through a season. Its her behaviour which is important - when shes ready, she'll turn her bottom to the dog, put her tail to one side and her back will ripple. Also, if the dog is experienced, he should know when she is ready, 'though some will mate, ready or not. Some maiden bitches do not like being mounted, so be careful as she may have a go at him then, but from her behaviour before that, she will make it clear that she is ready.
Good luck.

My bitch bled for 21 days which is normal for her...She bred on day 11,13, and 15....They can still breed if they are bleeding. Another time she stood on day 10...it just depends on her.

Good luck :)

It is our male, and the female is at our house.   Our male has been a stud twice before successfully, and has been around this bitch since she was a puppy.  She is nipping at him some.. I feel that her vulva is soft & spongy.. but am no "vulva expert".  There is another dog she could mate with, but wanted to use my dog as he has a great temperment, and is an excellent agilty, go-to-ground and obedience dog.  My concern now is that maybe she is too familiar with him, being doggy-friends with him for so long? is that possible?

I just keep thinking "tommorrow she will stand"  and tommorrow comes and she still has her tail blocking the way....

Seperate them for a bit through the day, sure someone will be along with better help...I also found when I bathed mine it worked lol :D

If she has her tail tucked down, she's not ready. I would separate them today, and re-introduce them tomorrow, as see how she responds. If no go, try the next day. Often they will get bored and 'browned off' if they are kept together all the time - you want to keep the element of excitement to keep them both as keen as possible.

Thanks.. I'll seperate them in different parts of the house in their crates tonight.. we have to go out for Christmas Eve anyway... I'll keep them away from each other until tommorrow morning.  Maybe I'll give them both a bath in the AM, too... Hopefully my male will get his "christmas gift" tommorrow ;) and she'll be a regular Cleopatra..   LOL

Well.. our Male was able tie with her today with some assistance.. She started to stand today better.  The other thing I was leaving out was that she is taller than him... we put a little pillow behind her hind legs and gave her a biscuit and pat her head to comfort her. Funny thing is that after the tie was all over.. now she is flagging her tail much more.. she is back with her owners and we are going to try mating again the day after tommorrow.

BTW - the idea of the bath *almost* helped.. last night after bathing her... she started running around and playing and such, and started to stand a little.. dogs are so funny when they are in the "ohhhhhhhhh... life is GREAT.. I'm sooooo CLEAN" mood.. lol

Also, she is still bleeding a little bit.

Have never bred mine, but mine bleeds straight through from day one to day 25!!  And it's heavier in the middle - none of this getting lighter colour!

Doh. My girl's still bleeding on day 13 too and I keep hoping it'll end soon but so far it's showing no signs of abating at all. Her tail doesn't go to the side either. As this is her first season I don't think she's worked out the birds and the bees yet. :)

Maiko, if it's her first season you won't be wanting to mate her! Wait till at least her third, preferably fourth, season.

Oh I'm not JG :) No plans to breed her at all, it was just an observation on her behaviour that she doesn't seem to be interested in that sort of thing. Apart from licking herself a lot more she's exactly the same really.

I had a bitch like that. But because she was never in the vicinity of a male whilst in season, the instincts never had to kick in. However, since she was spayed (at the age of 5) she gets much more excited and has to attempt (they get very cross) her young brothers after supper.

I figured that was a factor. We're an all girl household. No males (not even human).

LOL glad it worked :D

Well.. just an update.. he tied w/ her 4 times during days 14-19.. she stopped bleeding and became totally not standing on day 20.  Hopefully we will be successfull, my only concern is that he got her too late, as she bled through her whole cycle.  Time will tell.. Thanks for the tips... I guess a good indicator is if she has much personality change, so.. we shall see.. it has been over a week since the first tie.
