I have a 8 mo. border terrier who is a wonderful dog aside from attacking visitors!  he becomes REALLY excited, jumps up on them and will not leave them alone.  what can i do?

What are you doing at the moment?  If he has some basic obedience then try working on 'sit' when visitors come, which coupled with asking (no - make that TELLING) the visitors not to fuss him until he's sitting should help............

at the moment i am giving him leash corrections - which both horrifies my visitors who do not own dogs, and only makes richard more excitable.

thanks for your help.

I don't like to think that you are yanking at the lead when he jumps up at visitors - as you have discovered it is more likely to make him more hyper :(  Use the lead to keep him under control by all means - but work on what you *do* want him to do, rather than punish him for making up his own routine...

Ditto; if punishment (which is what "correction" is) worked it would work straight away. What happens when the dog becomes immune, will you "correct" him harder?

I'd agree with Digger about being firm with visitors. There is an old man at the park who used to give Sparky treats whenever he jumped up at him - all very well and good when he was a puppy, but not so funny now - this morning I finally summoned up the courage to tell the lovely old chap not to treat Sparky until he sat for him, rather than thanking him for the treat and apologising for Sparky nearly knocking him over - and on this afternoon's walk Sparky ran up to him and sat straight away. Wish I'd done it sooner.

Well I don't know if this is  helpful but BT's can be trained.  Mine came to me at 4 yrs old and he is perfect with people.  Will take commands, sit, be still for treats, go to his basket when asked and lie quiet.  The other day he stood still for over an hour to be groomed by a stranger.  He had all this before he came to me although he still has some way to go in other departments of training (e.g other dogs).  I'm no dog trainer so I have some classes lined up for mine.  I'd say, what you can't do yourself, seek help.  Your vet should know reputable doggie people.  Good luck!
