Hi, How do I get a 3 yr old maiden dog interested in mating a bitch.  He is home bred and lives with 1 male and 4 female dogs.  He shows absolutely no interest in the bitch at all, she on the other hand is very forward and is starting to get frustrated with him.  I do have the option of using my other dog, but the maiden is my first choice for this bitch

Just a suggestion but is your other male the alpha?
If so your maiden dog may not mate any of your bitches.
The only thing i can suggest is that you take the maiden dog and the bitch away from their usual habitat and away from the other dogs for a few days and keep your fingers crossed.

I would agree with this. If the other male is alpha then your maiden dog might not mate any of your bitches. The only other thing it might be is that the dog just does not like the bitch, although this does usually tend to be more of a bitch problem. Having had a champion bitch in a large kennel where I worked, we could never get this bitch to mate with any dog, from the kennel or from other kennels. I noticed that every day on the way past the kennel of the dog which had been returned to us, she would stop and lick him through the wire. He was not the best specimen of his breed, but she obviously liked him. So in a final attempt to get some progeny from this bitch, we let her and the returned dog get together, and she she stood perfectly. We got two puppies one was made up to a champion, the other was equally good but had been sold to a pet home, so was never shown.

Thanks for your replies much appreciated, have now mated the bitch to the maiden  dog.  The two boys are related so would still have good % of  the blood lines.  Have also registered as a user.
