Anyone any suggestions for toughening up my young bitch's pads. She has been charging around her kennel and has grazes on her pads.Obviously I'm using an antibiotic spray on them to help them heal but after that they need toughening up. Thought about Alum but chemist doesn't stock it any more.

Hi Lynn
Our chemist didn't stock it either, but they were willing to order it in for me. Maybe you could ask your chemist if they would do this for you, and if they won't, try another one to see if they would.

Hi Lynn,
My ex-stepfather used to hillwalk and he said that to toughen up your feet for hill walking you rub them with surgical spirit....no idea if it works but?
Christine
Have a wonderful Christmas, by the way, and I'll see you during 2004, no doubt!

Christine,
Thanks for that
Merry Christmas and happy New Year see you in a few weeks??
Lynn

It says on the bottles of witch Hazel that it is useful to toughen the feet. It is an excellent anticoagulant and clenser fort cuts and wounds.
They also add it to the eye wash Optrex.

Actually the young pharmasist hadn't even heard of it, nor the counter assistant who claimed to have been a nurse twenty years ago!!!!!! began to think I was from a different planet or getting old.

The pharmacist at our chemist didn't believe me either, but I insisted and she got out a catalogue and there it was :D If its any help, I've dug out my box and its made by Hillcross and its Alum BP (Aluminium Potassium Sulphate BP) 100g. Maybe if you go back and tell them that you'll get somewhere. Also on the box it says "Aids the prevention of bed sores and hardens the skin" so surely someone who was a nurse 20 years ago would have heard of it :D

Thanks to everyone for their help - I shall go armed to the chemist tomorrow - I was just gobsmacked when they all said they had not heard of it. I think she must have done this playing in the ice and snow because tonight she is hobbling so I've rubbed some Cut and Heal in. I would like to put boots on her till it heals but she lives with two demolition agents and they would probably chew her paws off it their determination to demolish the boots!!!!

Hi Lynn,
Haven't entered the club show, so it'll be WELKS I'll see you at, only going to Crufts to do Discover Dogs & browse, I think...maybe better not quote me as I'm sure there will be others perusing these boards who will jump on what I've said if I enter!!!!!!!!! ;)
Hi Lynn,
these days they let children be pharmacists, teachers and policemen. Have you noticed? And nobody seems to have morals anymore, oh I feel old!
GL

Join the club! I saw 2 policemen the other day who I swear must have been on Work Experience ...

Alum is also brilliant at healing split tails.
