Hi,
Anyone know about cats? Oscar (my cat) is drinking excessive ammounts of water for a couple of weeks I've figured Sal was drinking their water, but as we replace the water almost everytime someone passes I never thought much about it but today yesterday Oz came and stood on the edge of the bath miaowing as I was rinsing my hands, and I topped his water up not thinking much about it, then today Oscar came into the kitchen and drank from Sal's bowl for about 8 minutes non stop. I questioned everyone about yesterday and no one had emptied his dish yesterday or knocked it over,
What does excessive drinking mean? SLIGHTLY worried, I am thinking the worst, kidney's diabeties do cats get that? all sorts of terrible things going on in my head. Have phoned the vet and got an appointment at 10.10am tomorrow morning.
He is healthy in himself eating well not loosing or gaining weight, eyes fine (no third eye) so any idea's.
Oh he's 21 years young too.
Karen (worried now)

I would have her checked for diabete's...yes they can get it...hope all is well :)
21 one years wow :) Hope Taz lives that long

Cats can get any and all of the same problems that dogs and humans get, and a few of their own (they would tho wouldn't they? ;) ) Is he fed dry food?? if so it could be that he's just rehydrating himself. My 16 year old cat has the opposite problem and doesn't drink enough so has water mixed into her food - much to her disgust, but it ensures that she gets enough liquids.
WOW 21 years young, thats amazing, I thought 16 was good but mine's got a way to go yet!!
Good luck at the vets, hope its not serious.

Hello,
Thanks I will get him checked for everything :)
No he does not have dried food or semi moist because it makes his sister sick so neither have it.
Yes I suppose he is a good age but he and Cleo his sister (same age) are both healthy (fussy but healthy)
I will see what the vet says tomorrow, Oscar does not like the vets but his sister Cleo adores the vets in fact she adores anyone because she KNOWS she's sooooo stroke-able, that they won;t be able to resist her feline charms.
Oscar just likes people he knows but will put up with anything as long as he can put his head in my jacket/jumper whatever then he will put up with anything.
Karen (still worried)

Karen,
best of luck, our thoughts are with you

Hello,
Writing this in tears, Oscar has bad kidney trouble;he had blood tests at the vetS and two of the results came back 4 times higher than they should be.
The vet has given him a Nandrolin steriod shot and said to try a different food he suggested a few and has GIVEN me 14 tins of Hills Feline K/D food to see if he likes it if so I can buy some, which I thought was kind of him.
Oscar has been shaved under his chin and had has blood taken, and was very good. The vet said to keep and eye on him but given his age he thought food and the odd steriod would be the best course of action.
Oscar is fine just the humans a bit deflated. His sister is totally oblivious so I figure he's okay at the moment otherwise she would be mothering him.
Karen

Oh poor you, Karen. :( I do hope you can keep him comfortable. You obviously look after him very well to get him to that age, so try not to feel too bad about this. My old cats died at 18 years due to the same thing. It seems to be almost inevitable that this happens in old age, people too. The organs just wear out and fail.
Thinking of you. ((((((hug))))))

Thanks all,
Thinking straighter now.
Oscar has Chronic Renal Failure which is terminal, as you say Jeangenie things just wear out.
He seems okay in himself eating well etc, so we're just taking it as it comes, tonight he's beaten up a cat that dared to venture on the front garden then chased it off what can you do :D makes me wonder what I'm worrying about when he's taking on the world :)
Thanks for the kind words I appreciate them.
Merry Christmas Everyone

Hello,
Have you taken him to the vet lovelylady?
Yes he's given advice about diet but Oz does not seem to like to "hospital" food and to be honest I'd rather have him happy and eating something than miserable and eating very little. He eats lots of little meals throughout the day already (they both prefer that) nothing else I can do but keep him happy and comfortable. I know they are both enjoying life at the moment so I'm a happy cat owned person :)

You know whats best for Oscar ;-) you have had him for 21 years, my oldest cat lived till he was 18 with little health problems, apart from being castrated and his vacs, and to have a few teeth taken out in old age, i would sooner my cat ate little than none at all, and im sure Oscar knows how much he can manage on, as cats are more clever than we think ;-)

Dear Karen
'm sorry that you have had bad news - it's hard to take in, isn't it?
Personally, I think I would let him have what HE likes to eat - let his last months be ones where he relishes his food - if he cant still beat up the cats outside he is still enjoying life. Why take enjoyment of his food away from him? {{{hugs}}}}
Margot

Poor you :-( Oscar has no idea of what's ahead so he's OK. My Siamese had a similar problem and lived very happily for a year with regular steroid injections, ate and purred until she died at 16. {{{{Hugs}}}} to you and Oscar

Hi Karen, sorry to hear about Oscar but glad he is feeling not too bad in himself. He is such a good age isnt he. My Puss lived until she was over 22 and it is such a wrench when they start going downhill. He sounds a lovely chap and I am sure he will have a while in front of him still with you all.

Thanks he is lovely a proper "gentleman" the neighbours say :) considering the bad start he had found in a black bin liner in amulti storey car park wheely bin. He's had his whiskers pulled out and had many cigarette burns on his body he was just 5 weeks old. He and his sister were rehimed by the local "cat" woman and the vet I went to get a little ginger girl his sister she had not been harmed at all odd eh. I did not want a Tom or a mainly white cat and did not want two :) They were 6 weeks old
I came out with TWO a beautiful ginger white girl who I called Cleo and a Tom who was ugly covered in scabs mainly white who was petrified of anything and everything including ME.
21 years years later I still have them both, and the number of friends and family who have packed in smoking because Oscar was petrified of the smell etc is now numbering about 7.
He will enjoy himself he always has done.
Merry Christmas Karen

Karen that is a sad story but it has such a happy ending. Bless them both. You have given them good lives and have enjoyed them too. We cant ask for more can we?
Have a great Christmas - I am just starting mine now but going slowly :) :)

Hi Karen,
I'm so sorry to hear the news. It's such a shame. I know it's no consolation, but he's a great age you know, you've certainly looked after him well.
Also, something else I wanted to say, my cat, Sally, was diagnosed with chronic renal failure at age 16....she lived to be nearly 20 and was always happy and healthy.
Take care, and give him a bit of that turkey tomorrow and a great big fuss.
Love
Lisa

Hi Karen,
I'm so sorry to hear that the news was bad, but remember, he has no idea and as long as he is enjoying his food and putting his world to rights then he's having a great time. That he's lived to such a great age (and his sister) and is in such good condition is a tribute to your love, care and attention, no cat could ask for more. Try to enjoy christmas and I'm sure he'll be getting his turkey tomorrow as usual.
Regards

If its any help, my beautiful Burmese cat Benjy had kidney problems from 12 years old and the vet told me to feed nothing but chicken and white fish. He also said Deanes tinned cat food was good (not easy to find). With this diet, regular vet checks and an occasional course of steroids when I noticed blood in his urine, he lived happily without pain for a further 6 years.

Thanks these stories of cats living for a while after the diagnosis is soul lifting :)
As you have all said Oz is "in the dark" and totally unphased by it all.
Thank you all :)

Nope hes booked in to see the vet after christmas. the vet said to leave it a while as it could be hes drinking more as hes feeling under the weather or he may have a slight infection and at his age its best to leave it a little while see if it clears up , as antibiotics arent good at the best of times
