Hiya im thinking of buying a pup akita, but iv got a chow chow already (hes only 1yr old) and if i get a akita it will be living out with him. is this a bad idea¿ i have been told two spitz breeds will not get on with each other. iv had a newfoundland who lived with my chow but he has reciently passed away, my mother has owned a akita for about 2yrs now and he is no problem, and he lives with my mums king charles spaniel.
i have always admiared the breed and now would like to buy one any information will be great thanks.

Hi Mand
It's nothing to do with 2 Spitz breeds, it's because Akitas have to be boss!!! They are a wonderful breed but not reknowned for getting along with other dogs. If you buy a bitch, she will probably get on with your male Chow. If you buy a dog, he
may get on with your dog, if your dog is happy to play 2nd fiddle. Or he may not. I have a male Akita & 3 smaller Spitz, he gets along wonderfully with the 2 bitches but would seriously injure my male so they have to be kept apart. I think if you bought a bitch from a reputable breeder you would probably be OK but please make sure that the breeders have dogs of good temperament and who eye test & hip score.

Hi Mand
It's only my experience I'm going on, but yes, if you've got a male, I would definately go for a bitch & get her spayed. I would contact some Akita breeders & see what they say, some Akitas are dog friendly but I have to say that is not typical behaviour & if yours are to be kennelled together & not under constant supervision, you shouldn't take any risks. Good Luck, Akitas are very special.

Hi Mand
I have two Chows. If I was you I would go for a bitch.
A lot also depends on your Chows temperament.
I had a male 18 month old chow when I fetched a male chow pup in.
They ended up best of friends. My oldest was so laid back and the younger one always respected him as Alfa.
My opinion I would not risk getting a male Akita with a male Chow.
When my older Chow died I got a bitch Chow.

Deago is a very good dog when i take him a walk i some times meet up with a friend who has three other dogs and they are great together. i spoke to one woman who was selling akita pups and she said it would be ok to get another male as long as you intreduce them to each other there will be no problem. what do any of you think?

Akita's are not my breed but one of my club members who has since moved out of the area had 4 male Akita's kept in 4 seperate rooms! not my idea of dog fun! As people have said, they do not always mix well with others.

I would be very wary of that breeder!!! The best way to see the temperaments is to go and see a number of breeders personally & see how they keep their Akitas. Do they actually keep their males together? or their females for that matter?

If you look at the Chow breeders on this site. You will seee some also breed Akitas.
There phone numbers are there also. These are the people who you should ask.
Both breeds are very powerful.
Good luck if you do get the pup.

Mand,
I would go for a bitch if you already have a male. Akita's are funny with the same sex, and some times can be very dog aggressive. I have two bitches (Akita) and at first hated each other, but now they tolerate each other (under close supervision). Male Akita's are so different to bitches too, i have found bitches to be more loving and laid back in general to the males. Just my opinion.
If you need any advise, you can Email me at charlie@ukakitas.co.uk
Take care #& Good Luck
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!!

Hiya,
Akitas are not my breed, but a good friend of mine breeds them.
They seem to be great dogs, but from what my friend says, they can be very dog aggressive.
Maybe it would be best for you to have a bitch? If you had a male, everything may go well at first with him and your chow, but as soon as the akita reached sexual maturity you may well have a problem. It's probably better to avoid that situation than to have to rehome one of your dogs if things go wrong.
I've had the same kind of situation with a GSD male and a border collie male..they were great friends when younger, but then all of a sudden they hated each other. I've been lucky enough to be able to keep my boys, but it's not always that way.
Take care, and merry christmas!!
