Topic Dog Boards / Health / Bleeding bitch

Can anyone help.  My bitch has recently finished her season (about the 9th December).  When I got up this morning to let her out she had a large thick blood stained mucous like discharge on her bedding.  I have not noticed this before.  There is also a possibility that she is 20 days pregnant.  Could this just be a normal occurance after a season has finished?

Any suggestions, anyone?

Firstly - ANY discharge after season or at any other time must be taken with extreme caution and your dog needs to see a vet ASAP in case she has a pyometra.
Secondly - is this a planned pregnancy?

No it was not planned.  We do want her to have a litter but not this soon.  If she is pregnant and everything is okay we will let the pregnancy go ahead.  We are getting things prepared just in case she is pregnant and have a lot of help and support from the family.  If she is not pregnant then we have discussed the option of chemical controlled heat supression on a temporary basis.

If she does have pyometra then we could be looking at spaying her then?

Thanks Kathy for your advice I will phone my vet this afternoon and ask him to have a look at her.  I will let you know what he says.

Hiya :)
I'm hoping its not Pyo, symptoms vary bitch to bitch, so its difficult to say. Pyo can come on quickly, or sometimes more slowly, the main symptoms being a discharge (often pus or blood like) and lethargy, progressing to sometimes severe pain. It isnt common, but can be fatal, but if caught early enough the outcome can be very good. Even if it isnt pyo, its still best to get her checked out, as better safe than sorry. Pyo would mean spaying, yes, as its basically a severe infection of the womb, which can rupture. How old is she? What breed? Do you know anything about the Dad (eg breed, size, health, etc)? Hoping it's something much less serious - try not to worry.
Good luck
Kathy

Hi kathy

Tammy is 5 year old staffordshire bull terrier, weighs about 14kilos and stands about 14 1/2 - 15 inches tall.  The dad of the pups, if she is pregnant, which Iam assuming is what you mean, is my 5 1/2 year old staffordshire bull terrier.  He stands about 16 in tall and weighs about 18kilos and no health problems.

Phoning my vet know in 5 minutes if I can manage to draw myself away from this forum.

Kathy

Have just come back from the vets.  Everything is okay.  The vet was very reassuring and said it was not uncommon for bitches to have this discharge.  It's just their way of clearing their system.

I feel such an idiot worrying.  I pestered my vet with all sorts of questions but he didn't mind at all and was very helpful.

Thanx for your help and support
