Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Chocolate lab pup with a rash
- By Guest [gb] Date 21.12.03 11:18 UTC
My pup is 9 months old, and has a rash in her armpits and a little down her legs. A little of the fur is missing not a lot, and there are red bumps/spots. The spots are not close together.

Could this be an allergy, or something like scabies?

I use spot on flea treatment, could she be allergic?

She isn't scratching excessivley.

Thanks to all who reply, and merry xmas!

Please take your dog to the vets..our choc lab had the same thing and it only got worse and on the vets advice we returned him to the breeder.we were all heart broken.
im sure this wont happen to you but a vet needs to see your dog.

No.I will answer your question thought someone would ask that.
From the day we got our choc lab we were taking him to the vets and the vet done all the checks that you would do for that complaint and nothing worked the dog wasnt getting any better and the rash turned into boils we even took him to a specialist and the treatment he tried didnt work by this time the dog was getting nasty with the children..not the dogs fault he was in pain..
So on the vets advice we returned him to the breeder and the vet wrote her a letter saying that she should not breed from the mother anymore.I didnt return the dog as an easy way out i was only taking advice from the people who know best.we will never forget him.

It must have been very hard to do it.

It is a shame that you never got to the bottom of the problem though but you must have tried everything from what you have told us.

Do you know what happened to the pup at all ?

Hi
Yes we did try everything and returning the pup was on the vets advice.
No sorry i dont know what the out come was we phoned the breeder a few days after and she said the dog was still scrathing but didnt really want to talk.
I just hope she listend to the vet and didnt breed the the bitch anymore.
We still think about marston (the dogs name)now and like i have already said it wasnt an easy thing to do and not the easy way out we all loved that dog. this was over a time of six months.

It could be lots of things, food allergy, environmental allergy, allergy to flea bites, walking dandruff, mange etc etc the list is endless. Most are easily treatable but you MUST get a correct diagnosis if necessary with skin scrapes, blood tests etc.

Hi Guest

As Tohme writes it could be a lot of things. My choc lab puppy had a little red rash under one of her armpits when she was younger. It turned out to be the food I gave her. Cuase as soon as I changed the brand the rash disappeared.

Have you tried to change the food?

As has been said, this could be any of a number of things.  Our dog had what sounds like a similar thing when he wasn't much younger than yours, and it turned out to be pyoderma - like teenage acne.  Soon cleared up after he had an injection.
