Now, I realise that we have totally drained this subject but pleeeease can someone offer me a little help. Kiera my puppy came into season at least fifteen days ago. It was her first season at five and a half months. The reasons that i am not sure when she came into season are: she was spending a lot of time outside (her own choice) and I didn't expect it to happen at such a young age in a large breed. She did become attractive to the males at ringcraft the week before I noticed and she did try continuously to escape from our garden (without success) which she had never tryed before. The blood was red at first, then it went lighter with a yellowish tinge, then it went darker. It has now stopped. She is still swollen. Now for my questions: Has her season finished when she stops bleeding, if so could she now show tomorrow, will she still be attractive to dogs (ours hardly paid her any attention), when does the swelling go down, at what point in all of this would she have ovulated.
Thanks for helping me once again.

no she not out of her season up to 21 to 28 days, when they are near the end of spotting, this is when she may be ready to be mated, not all bitch will be ready.on day 10 to 18, to be mated.some are early some are late.you cannot go to the show if she day 15,she be attractive to the dogs specality the one that have gone to stud ,like boy he nows that a bitch is in season at a show he will not stand,he allover the place,it not fair on other people dogs or bitchs if you take her to the show, but once again there no rule to sated no bitch season but i wish the kc been one in,if you take on a bitch you know that you have to forgo shows, workingtest, etc, beacuse of seasons, are the other dogs in the house neutred or non stud dog that beacuse they are not taking any notice of her and it is her first season which is not as stonge of a bitch of 2 years old.put this topic could go on all day.

Briedog,
thanks for the reply, I am not going to be showing Kiera tomorrow it is more a hyperthetical question really. What I want to know really is what are the physical signs that her season has stopped. Her bleeding has stopped and because I didn't notice the start of her season she could be on day 19-20 for all I know. I would not show her unless I was totally sure that it had finished.
Thanks again, Naomi

Normally when the vulva returns to a normal size and thre is no discharge at all (even clear). If it is a first season she will not be as small in that area as before, but smaller than in season!

It amazes me how many pet owners (don'ty mean you just generally), I meet who think a bitch has finished the season when the bleeding stops, as this is usually the time when they are most fertile and ovulate!

That was the impression that I was put under through reading a web site which said basically one week coming on, one week on and then one week coming off. I assumed that when the bleeding stopped that was the end of the season and that they were fertile half way through (10-14 days in). This is why I have been confused. I thought that as we have gone through each of the colour changes in the blood (sorry to be so graphic) and that the bleeding had now stopped, she was now out of season. Obviously not.
Thanks, Naomi

I have an 8 month old saffordshire bull terrier called brooke an she is in season for the first time it started four days a go the blood was a brown colour but is now a red colour. Im a bit worried about her as she is not herself she seems to look very sad and is'nt her playful self but She is still eating her food .Is this normal.

Yes, they often seem a little sad and confused about it all. When the season ends she should be back to normal, though perhaps a bit more grown up.
