yeah..and i have this from Guardian Unlimited..... [link]http://www.guardian.co.uk/Distribution/Redirect_Artifact/0,4678,2-1109292,00.html[link/]
apparently we are fashion victim owners...swaying to more exotic breeds! ;)

Hi Melody, I read the article too. It's quite sad really, as it seems to prove some people do see dogs as fashion statements :(

Since when was a Pomeranian British it's German!!  Glad that Spanish Water Dogs aren't mentioned, is that because we don't charge the ridiculous prices that some of the other breeds are doing?

Typical!! You can't believe anything you read in the newspapers these days! ;)

I assume they are taking the Pom as a *British* breed as Queen Victoria had the breed ..so it dates back in this country to the late 1800's . I suppose if you go far enough back very few breeds *actually* originate in the UK :D :D
- By Brainless [gb] Date 18.12.03 18:31 UTC
In that case my breed the Norwegian Elkhound would count as British (try telling the Norwegians that :D) as it arrived here around 1870 with the gentry returning from fishing and hunting trips.  that is before a breed standard or club in their country of origin.  A breed club was formned here in 1923.

Have they got the Canadian labrador as British too???
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 18.12.03 18:34 UTC
I dont know ..did you look at the list I did a link for?
- By Wishfairy [gb] Date 18.12.03 18:55 UTC
Hmmm. They don't mention the Saffordshire Bull terrier or English bull terrier and their popularity seems to be growing

Just another example of what happens on a slow news day.

Also quite sad that the bulldog is less than 10% but good in that it's not easily available to every idiot who wants a status symbol :)
- By Wishfairy [gb] Date 18.12.03 18:59 UTC
OK so I misread the chart :o

Looks like the bulldog is NOT in decline afterall :)
- By Lorelei [gb] Date 18.12.03 19:09 UTC
Wheres the Pointer? Maybe its best not to be too popular.
- By Christine Date 18.12.03 20:54 UTC
What ever breed/race they are they are all still dogs. Doesn`t matter what nationality they are does it?
Or maybe it does?
I love dogs of all varieties but prefer Labradors to live with. :)

Bulldogs are hard to come by ;-) every one of mine apart from the rescued two, there was long drawn out conversations with all the breeders concerned.
They are certainly not easily available as you said, its very hard to convince very good breeders at times that you are the right person for their pups, which is a good sign of a good breeder, when i have been to see puppies in the past, its always been refreshing to meet breeders that actually do care.
So i must say that i dont mind the third degree ;-)
- By Wishfairy [gb] Date 19.12.03 13:53 UTC
I think it's a good sign if the breeder tries to put you off as much as they can. They have to do what they can to make sure only the right people take on such a high maintenance dog. I know I'll walk mine for hours and feed play and love them but wiping their bums and drying their faces... not while I've still got 3 kids in the house  :)

I read the article earlier today, and the Lab Retriever was referred to as a Canadian breed. Unless you're talking about another breed

liberty :)

Edited to add. I think the article was just mentioning the British Breeds that were in decline, so Maybe the Staffs and Pointers are holding their own :)
I noticed that there was no dramatic decline in the number of FCR's, but then they have not been as popular as the Lab in recent years...... Good :D

Er...British ...the article talks of the declining British breeds I think :)
- By Harry C. [gb] Date 19.12.03 10:58 UTC
Melodysk,
Of course "POM's" are British.  You only have to ask 'any' Australian where 'Pom's' come from.  They won't tell you any lies.
;)  :D  :p

I read it with interest, Melody, as it is a subject close to my heart, owning a very old British breed of declining numbers.  I was suprised to see the Kennel Club spokesman say they would take action if a breed looked threatened, I have never heard tell of the KC taking such action as far as I can tell so long as dogs are being registered 'Buy British' does not seem to be important to them some of these breeds are already dicing with very small gene pools.  I not sure what the answer is myself, I do not believe it is to encourage breeders to produce more of these declining breeds, what is the point if people are not seeking them.  I suppose the only thing that would increase the desire for them is publicity, people seem so influenced by PR in our high consuming, modern society it would be easy to stress their rarity value which of course would make them instantly desirable :) but by creating an interest like that you would play into the hands of the puppy farmers.

There has been a lot in the dog papers recently as the KC are taking the decline of British breeds seriously.  I still love my wooly Spanish ones though :d
- By luvly [gb] Date 19.12.03 01:34 UTC
Was there a cocker on that list or am i going blind :P
- By Isabel Date 19.12.03 21:37 UTC
No, Lovelady, I don't think there is, but it is a list of declining British breeds not just a list of breeds.
- By Isabel Date 19.12.03 21:32 UTC
I've stopped taking the dog press lately as I no longer show, what action are the KC proposing to take?
