hi, I was looking into getting another dog (jrt), and went to visit the pups.. they have 3 litters right now.. all kept inside the house.. anyway.. when i arrived.. the females were out of their crates.. and they got all wound up and started fighting some.. and one of the female mother dog went over and attacked one of the pups from a different litter... it was quite disturbing. She picked it up by the neck & shook it like a toy.. and by the time I left about 1/2 hour later - the pup was moving around ok.. but *crying* a lot.. and mostly walking in circles (it is only 3 weeks old tho)..
I was wondering if this is a common occurance. the bitch that attacked the other pup seemed friendly otherwise. I think i am going to pass from getting a pup from this person, but it made me wonder if this happens much...
thanks

Not with good breeders, i would stay away from this person they dont seem to care about the dogs/pups just out to make money IMO?
Isn't that something that happens in the wild, that they try to make sure only their strain survives?????Only a guess or is that just males?????

I would steer well clear. It's extremely unusual to have more than one litter of pups at a time. That bitch is either stressed out (not good animal husbandry) or nasty tempered (which could be passed on to the pups). Neither scenario would suggest this is a person from whom to buy a good pet.

I agree with both Corso Girl and JG. Firstly, three litters at once screams to me of breeding for profit, and secondly, even if you can accept the fact that there are three, surely all puppies and mums shouldn't be mixing together?

Sounds appalling to me. The only time I had 2 litters close together, I made sure both litters were kept completely apart (not easy in a 2 bedroomed bungalow!). Nursing bitches don't need that kind of stress & anyone who has 3 litters in these conditions does not have welfare as a priority.

My breeder when I went to get Tiva had two litters 2 weeks apart and all the moms and pups got on great. The bitches even cleaned each others puppies and nursed them. Even the spayed ones would go over and clean the pups when they were out having a run, boston puppies when playing can be pretty rough.
Yes if one of her bitches could do this to a pup I would question why she would have her out around the pups, I too would look else where.
I believe it is the male species that will kill the offspring so they can bring the females back in heat...Lions do that, if they run off the male of the pack and take over they will kill all offspring from him which brings the females back in heat. Cats (our pets) are known to nurse and care for other kittens if kept in a community and will babysit eachothers kittens while the mothers go off hunting, if a stronger male comes in he will kill off the offspring. Watched a tv program on this had to do with cats on a farm, very interesting :)
Thanks dollface, knew it was something like that, and I agree with everybody, this reeks of profit,Sandra.

How did the breeder react when this happened ??
Not having had more than one litter at once I have never personally come across it, but I have heard from othe people who have had two at once that one mother would kill the pups of the other if she could get at them, so I don't think it is unusual.
Three litters at once!! I'd avoid that g-reeder
Christine

Me personally I don't see anything wrong with having more then one litter at once. Most bitches kept together come into heat together, and if bred only once a year or every two years I would have all my litters at the same time. In hopes out of one of them I would get the pup or two that I want, then the rest of the time would be focused on my dogs and not just the pups. Puppies do take a lot of time and money to bring up right, more then a 2-3 litters at a time would be alot for one person. The most my breeder has had was 3 at a time with about a week to 2 weeks between the two, the benifets I see for that is if something happened to one bitch you always have another to help incase of emergencies, or if one had to many the other can help out. I think it is better for a pup to be reared by a bitch then bottled fed if possible.
Just my own opinion :)

My breeder actually will have 3 litters. She had one born on the 19th of November, the litter my little girl is in was born on the 11 of December and then another is due on the 24th of this month. The thing is she is one of the top breeders of these dogs in the States. she has modifidy her whole house and property for the dogs. All the dogs she breeds are champions and are given a ton of training and so forth. She doesn't work and dedicates her life to improving the breed. She definately doesn't breed for money because compare to other breeders I have checked into she has the better rates and the best contrate, garentees, and rebates for titles earned by her buyers. She only breeds once a year or once every two years. The three bitches that she breed this year were the only ones breed. Plus she has a long waiting list for her pups. All the pups usually are booked before they are even born. Which I think is great. Her criteria for her buyers is long also.
So I don't think it is how many bitches that are bred but how the place looks, what kind of impresion the breeder gives you, the titles and training the mothers and fatehrs had, can the fathers be seen, the contract, garentees, health checks and so on. PLus is this person breeding several different types of dogs, how long has she been into this breed, all of these are important questions.
I would be worried yes because of the bitch attacking the other pups. How did the breeder react? But just because she had 3 litters there is not a reason to not get a pup from her. Check out all the criteria of her an dher dogs and her history. You have a right to. The pup will be a member of your family.

<<I don't think it is how many bitches are bred, it is how the place looks>> Tosh!
I have investigated 'undercover' a commercial breeder in my breed, where the outward appearances were okay - the detail, however, of falsified pedigrees etc was a complete sham!
<<All the dogs she breeds are champions.>>
Blimey! No breeder can claim that! Especially one who breeds non-standard colours that can't be shown!
You're being taken for a ride!

I ment all the breeding dogs are champions. Not all the dogs she breds are champions. No breeder can do that. Every litter will have whats known as pet quality. Some might not even have any show quality pups. There are no garentees no matter how careful you are in your breeding program. How the place looks is an excelent indication. I am not just talking about her house I mean the whole place. You also forgot to include the fact that I said you have to check the fathers and bitches heath records, have they been shown and a ton of other investigation work. I don't like the fact that you are telling me I am being taken for a ride when I have put months of investigation work into finding this breeder. I talked to a lot lof people who have gotten pups from her, people who know her in the show comunity and people who have heard of her. I have checked and recheck pedigrees. Had the contrack checked out by a lawyer and have talked to people whohave bought a show quality pup from her and shown their pups and got the rebates. Please don't suddenly jump to conclusions when you read a post and then insult as question to verify what you think you read then make a judgemment. I have done extensive research into her and her dogs because this dog will be my constant companion. I said a lot more then what you quoted.
