I have an 11 week old Gordon Setter who is due his next injection next week, once he gains his freedom how much is enough?? I know he should have short walks, approx 15 mins, but how many times a day is too much? he stands with his front paws on the lounge window sill looking so wistfully at the park opposite!! Mind you, once out the gate he might not be so brave!

Hi,

I would recomend a 15-20 min once or twice a day, purely for socialising and take him as many different places as possible to expose him to as many different things, people, animals and places as possible.

When he is about 9 months old, he can have "normal" exercise, ie. two walks of at least 1 hours free running every day, but you will need to build up to this slowly from about 7 months old, so as not to damage his joints and muscles.

In order to give a steady increase in work I always recommend approximately 5 minutes per month of age so by 12 weeks you are looking at 15 minutes. A couple of times a day is ideal. It may not be perfect but it's a nice easy rule to remember and allows for muscles to develop.

Thanks for that!! Murphy and I are counting the days till Friday - freedom day!!! his wistful staring out the lounge window should hopefully lessen! it will be interesting to see how brave he is though when faced with the big wide world!!
