Topic Dog Boards / General / What's the going rate for a Shar Pei?
- By Katie1 [gb] Date 15.12.03 21:58 UTC
Hi

We thinking of getting a Shar Pei or Lab but first wanted to know how much the going rate is for a Shar Pei?

Many Thanks
Katie

They are very different breeds Katie. Do some research and see which one would suit your lifestyle best.

Good Luck

Thank you

I have done research and know that they are different but both would suit my family's lifestyle, but cant find much on the internet about the price of a Shar Pei.

There is a lady on here called Dizzy (and don't let the user name fool you ;)  ) who breeds Shar Pei, hopefully she'll be along later, and give you some of the information you require.

Hi Katie,
These two breeds have very different requirements. Labradors are far more active, for instance, than shar peis, and need much more exercise. Price should be the last consideration, if you are going to get a breed that will be happy with you.

<<<Price should be the last consideration>>>

If only it always could be! But it is a consideration for lots of people who have the time and love for a new dog but not the 'bulk' money up front to buy a dog - and this doesn't mean that they can't afford feeding or insurance either.

Also it's very hard to find out the price of a good pedigree dog without asking somebody and maybe the poster thought it better to ask on an open forum than asking a breeder who might  at them ;)

When I started looking for a staffi pup last year I was expecting to pay around £150 - £200 , as this is what I'd seen them advertised for... a bit of research later and I discover that for a well bred dog it's nearer £450. A big difference but worth paying for.

Labrador Information & Shar Pei Information.
Make sure the breeders have carried out all the necessary health checks for their breed.
- By Sue H Date 16.12.03 10:16 UTC
There are no current health checks required for shar pei, but i know hips are important for labradors, not sure about the eyes.

I don't think there is anything wrong with someone wanting to know the general price of a puppy, i would be the same if i was looking to buy a breed i had never owned before.

Katie.......feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions on the breed in general........Sue.

"There are no current health checks required for shar pei"

So the Shar Pei has no known health problems at all? How do you know if no one bothers checking?
- By Sue H Date 16.12.03 14:29 UTC
The shar pei has many known health problems, but there are no current tests recommended by the Breed Clubs before using males & females for breeding. Hip scoring is done in the US, but not over here, except for a couple of individuals.

There had been at the start of the year 53 Shar-Pei scored and the BNS was 18 with one individual scoring 81 - may be the breed should be more bothered as it is hard to believe that only the worse 53 have been scored.

It seems the price varies, from £650 to £1000 for a well bred puppy.

Thank you all  very much for your help.
I do plan to make sure it's health is OK and things.
We probably will go along with a Shar Pei for sure now!

Thanks again
Katie
