Topic Dog Boards / General / metal food bowls?
- By SaraN [gb] Date 15.12.03 17:12 UTC
Hello everyone. I was speaking to my god mother the other day and she told me not to use metal food bowls because they have something bad in them and when the dog licks the bowl it gets ill from something in the metal (her vet told her this) I was just wondering if anyone has any views on this or any people could type in about their dogs using metal food bowls? I know a lot of people that use them and are un aware of any dangers so I'm not entirely sure if this is true.

All my dogs have metal (stainless steel i think) bowls.  Never had a problem and even young pups eat from them after they have growen out of cat bowls!!!!!!

There used to be a theory that eating from aluminium bowls (and cooking in aluminium saucepans) could cause Alzheimer's, but that has since been disproved. I've never heard anything about stainless steel bowls (which is what most are) being remotely dangerous. My dogs always eat from steel bowls, and, barring accidents, live well into their teens.

Stainless steel is one of the most stable metals around - which is why it is used in so many commercial catering establishments.  Aluminium could be a problem though, but I've never seen a dog bowl made of aluminium, all my dogs bowls are SS and have been for over 20 years - my last two dogs died aged 17 and 14.

We have always used stainless steel bowls.  Ours would eat the plastic ones!!!  The only thing is that we have stone floors in our kitchen and utility room so they love clanking them round afterwards!!!

Stainless steel is inert and used to pin bones together internally therefore, except in extremely rare cases, SS should have NO problems in this area.  It is the material of choice from which to feed as it does not break, bend or hole easily, and does not give off chemical fumes like plastic ones do.
