Hello everyone out there. I have been told that this is the best place to seek further advice about whether it is a good or bad idea to have two male chows together. At present I have a two year old chow who is dominant, but a brilliant dog. I am about to collect a 10 week old chow from the same breeder. I would like to know if this can work and what to do minimise the risk of fighting and to socialise them so they will get on. I understand that this is a bit of a lottery. But I just prefer dogs to bitches (personality). Any advice you could offer will be very much appreciated. Thank you

Seasonal greeting to you all

Never owned Chows, but do own Spitz breeds & personally I would think you are taking a risk. It all depends on the personality of the pup. If he is happy to be 2nd fiddle, it will be OK, but if he is dominant like your 2yr old then you'll be in for trouble. Are you willing to let the young one go if it doesn't work out or do you have the facilities to keep them apart for ever?? Do you know any Chow oners who keep 2 dogs together who you could have a word with? What does the breeder say? Two dogs often will live together quite happily, better than 2 bitches, but you can't predict how they will get on. I prefer dogs too, but a bitch would be a safer option (provided one of them is neutered).

I own a spitz breed(elkhound) and own 2 adult males with no problems at all. There are several others in out breed that have 2 or more males in the household quite happily so it can work but I would speak to some Chow owners first as they will be able to give you advice on the breed specifically.
Try the breed club..they're usually very helpful
