Can you please help, i have a lovely kennel for my 2 dobermanns but the little one who is 6 month old keeps wetting there bed, when i bring them in the house the smell is overpowering, i have changed the bedding and also let her sleep in it wet hoping she will not like it and stop, but nothing is working how can i get her to stop, she has also started eating her own mess which isnt very nice especially when she gives you a big kiss. please any ideas will be great,

Leaving the bed wet and letting her sleep in it will give her the idea that it is normal.  The bedding needs to be kept as dry and clean as possible.

Has she been housetrained?  Kennel dogs are often not housetrained so she might not realise she is supposed to "go" outside.  If she is then it may be an incontinence problem or UTI.

Is she disturbed?  My youngest bitch will often wet the floor if my husband comes downstairs in the early hours to make a cup of tea because he can't sleep (he *can't* let the dogs out either for some inexplicable reason).  It could be a fox doing its rounds that disturbs her or a neighbour or milkman?

There are various threads on what to do with dogs that eat their own mess, again it can have many causes, bordom, something lacking in her diet, over-feeding and the food not been properly digested so it is still "interesting".

Some people recommend a hard boiled egg daily and others putting pineapple chunks in with their food.

I think I would be included to recommend a good quality diet that is easily assimilated by her body so that little waste-matter is produced.

yes she is house trained, but the only problem i have with her is when she is in the house and she runs up the stairs she will jump on my bed and wet there, so doors are kept firmly shut from now on, when we built the kennel the plan was for them only to be in there at night, or when we go out, but with her wetting there bed they smell awful.

I don't know why she would wet on your bed (good idea to prevent access) could Diesel or your older bitch be intimidating her or is she coming into season?

While you are finding out why this is happening, in the meantime to assist .......

I have always used deep straw bedding on a deep layer of wood shavings.  Although a little messy, straw is very warm for kennelled dogs in winter.  Any urine drops through the straw and is absorbed by the shavings, so the dogs stay clean and sweet-smelling.  Any damp material is removed/replaced morning and evening. Any faeces in the kennel will also adhere to the straw/shavings and be less attractive to the dog to eat.   All waste material can be burned (or composted!) and is cheap an readily available.  Always use first-grade straw and shavings.

I have used this type of bedding for 25 years - for puppies through to 16-year old geriatrics - with no problems whatsoever except, I must admit, some bits blowing round the garden and treading into the house a little - a small price to pay for warm, clean, dry healthy dogs.
