Hi
I noticed on Monday that my 7 month old Yorky had a swollen vulva, and when I used a bit of tissue and wiped her there was a small amount of blood.
And as I have a male basset I have been keeping them apart and have been watching her very carefully, but since Tuesday there has been no more blood and her swelling seems to have gone down, could I have caught the end of her season and missed the beginning, is it normal for a yorkie to only bleed for a few days ?, or shold I still assume that she is in season for her 3 weeks.
The reason she has not been spayed is because she developed a growth under her chin which had to be removed with surgery and our vet did not want to put such a young dog through any more ops so close together.
So she is going to be spayed in 2004 instead.
The funny thing is our male basset does not seem at all interested in her in that way he just wants to play with her as usual.

You can't take any risks with a bitch this small & this young. Keep a close eye on her for at least 3 weeks & don't ever leave her alone with your dog until you are certain she has had a full, proper season. You may not be seeing any more blood because she is keeping herself clean. Your dog should tell you when she is in full season, but don't be fooled by him not taking any notice of her at the moment.

Also bitches are ready for mating when their vulva softens and reduces in size a bit and uswusally the bleeding has stopped.

A bitch normally only bleedsw i9n the first half of the season, and is in fact most receptive after this.

If I had a resdient dog I would keep them apart until her vulva has gone back to nearly what it was before the season, and looks all closed, about four weeks, for extra safety.

How long does the bleeding part usually last?

Have had a bitch that only showed colour (blood) for 3 days and another that bled to some extent till the last few days. Be on the safe side and watch her for the full 3 week. Some bitches do not bleed at all but can still be mated and can still have pups, that sort of season is called a silent season, and really irritating if you are waiting to mate her.

Hi

I'm wondering, did you notice, before her vulva was swollen if she had kind of a zit downthere?

I have a labrador bitch, 8 months old, and she has for the second time, what my vet called a zit on the side of one of the cracks. The last time he said it could be pre-season, and that the "real" season might fist appear in a couple of months time.
Now its here again, and I just talked to 2 different vets, they both say, that it could be the season approaching.

BAD TIMING! I'm going to babysit a rottweiler dog for the next month, Tyson is 6 months old. They won't be alone together, but I can get pretty busy even so.

I am hoping that it isn't season, but this is my fist dog, and I have no idea, when and how!

If it is, and you are busy you will have to separate them or kennel one of them. Even if you are there and watching the young dog will be very distressed and you will have your work cut out. Don't take a risk, one or both of the dogs could be injured.

Hi

I'm going to leave him in his own home, when I'm at work, so they will never be left alone together.

How long time do you think, will pass before I can se if it really is her first season.

They were playing together yesterday afternoon, and there were no signs what so ever, that she should be coming in season. They were just running around as they always does. They have known eachother since they were small puppies. He wasn't interested in her in any other waym than he usually is.

Gosh I don't know, but I'll work it out somehow :-) His owners are leaving today for a trip to Brazil.

Difficult problem for you, you will have to keep them in different rooms or cage them both. No hope of his breeder taking him back for a while I suppose, if you explain what has happened.

Hi

Well there is nothing yet. They were playing like they always do. But Tyson had to sleep in his own home this night, because he couldn't calm down. he wanted to play with Luna all the time. I'm sure he'll be okay in a couple of days. He's just not use to being with a another dog inside. He has to learn that we don't play inside. I live on the third floor, and the woman living downstairs can almost see the floor moving :-)

So today I'm picking him up after work, and I'm going to go a long walk with them for about an hour, and then maybe they'll become tired enough to relax when we come home.

Naive thinking - I know. But luckily I have a solution: we can go to Tyson's home and stay there until its bedtime!
