Topic Dog Boards / General / Pedigree Papers
- By DAVID J DROTOS [gb] Date 14.12.03 14:57 UTC
Some months back (approx 3), i purchased a dog, it is a breed of dog that i waited to find for some time, when the purchase was completed by myself the seller / breeder made a few promises one was that she would forward the pedigree to me. I contacted her about the papers as the example that she showed me was very impressive, obviously professionally done, after waiting and e'mailing this breeder, she sent me a pedigree paper that looked as though it was written by a 10 year old over breakfast, i quizzed her about the paper and all I was told by her is that she did not have time, prior to this i was told that it was at the printers etc etc etc. the papers do not even have my dogs date of birth on which i pointed out, still to this date she has not done anything to remedy this sloppy service is there anything i can do to procure a decent pedigree paper, the other problem that may arise is if i decide to breed my girl and have to go back to this breeder. If anyone can shed any light on false advertising etc i would be most grateful. JOHN D.

I would suggest you contact the Kennel Club with your dog's Registered name and number (on her registration certificate) and buy a certified copy from them. I believe under KC rules the breeder has to provide you with a copy of the dog's pedigree (minimum of 3-generations) and most breeders I know provide a 5-generation pedigree, but unfortunately there is no requirement that this will be a 'quality' document. The certificates from the KC are £6 for a standard 5-generation pedigree, or £15 for an enhanced 5-generation pedigree, on embossed paper with Champions in red.

Hope this helps.

Hi, the pedigree that i have goes back 5 generations naming all champs etc. unfortunately this breed is not recognised by the uk/kc, so they wont have any info on the dog, however when i purchased the dog another promise was that the breeder would notify kennels in spain that i have this breed, i also contacted the kennels in spain and they knew nothing about me having a dog.

More importand then the pedigree, have you got the Kennel Club registration document so that you can transfer ownership.  If you have, then you can order a pedigree of your dog from them, I think it is a five generation one.  The internet is a good source to go back further than that.

If they are not KC registered then you would not be able to breed KC registered puppies.  The date of birth should also be on this.

Hi, i have a pedigree paper but not to the standard that i was shown and led to believe i would receive, plus the dogs d.o.b. is not on the pedigree, that is basically what has triggered me looking for help, paying all the money i did for false promises, i do love the dog and would not give it back but i would have thought that i would of had the package i was promised.

When you were looking for a puppy, how did you come to hear of this breeder? Was it through a local paper? If so and the puppies are advertised as registered with the Kennel Club, and you have not been given a registration certificate with the puppy, then you can go to the trading standards people to get help sorting this out. You could also alert the local paper to what has happened to you.
If you have the registration certificate you can buy your own copy of the pedigree from the Kennel Club in Aylesbury. A good breeder will always try to provide you with a registration certificate, a diet sheet, insurance cover for the first few weeks, and a properly written out pedigree. They will also show you the health certificates for the dam and copies of the sires certificates to show you they have done everything possible to breed a healthy puppy.

Hello John

Is it a Presa Canario that you have?  As i belive that they are not recognised by the Kc, so it would be pointless talking to the Kc about your puppy, as with many non kc recognised breeds, you have to be very careful where you buy from, as sometimes theres no going back.
I doubt that theres little that you can do about this, only keep trying to talk to the breeder whom you had the puppy from. I can put you in touch with a very reputable breeder of Dogo Canarios in the uk, to see if maybe he is willing, or knows how to help you sort this out, would you like me to e-mail you with his details?

Hi Dean, thanks for the info, i thought i maybe looking for a needle in a hay stack but its always worth a try especially when you pay big bucks for a dog, wish you had contacted me when i was first looking for a presa. i will try writting to this breeder but have done so via e'mail, maybe one more try then i will try small claims. THANKS for your help. please e'mail the address of the breeder you know.

You could try writing to her, giving her 14 days notice to supply you with the proper paperwork for your dog, if you do not get satifaction, you could take proceedings against the seller in the small claims court.

This will not help David but for my own info, if the parents of this pup are registered with a kennel club in Europe then could not the pup also be registered with the same kennel club? I assume that as the pedigree shows champions the dogs must be registered.

Hi Jackie, i was led to believe that they were registersd in spain so i checked, only after being disillusioned with this breeders service, and behold i was told by the spanish club that they did not know of this breeder.

I am wondering where you bought this dog? Whether or not it is a breed you can take proceedings against the breeder if they advertised anywhere that the dog was registered with a kennel club, under the sale of goods act. I would try talking to the trading standards folk and I'd inform the Exchange and Mart of this breeders behaviour. The Exchange and Mart has had for years a reputation of being the place to buy dodgy puppies from not very responsible breeders, over the last few years it really has been trying very hard to improve it's image, so I know they'd be interested to hear about this.

Hi Polly, thanks for the info about exchange and mart, when i was first looking for this breed of dog i was actually advised to look in the e & m on this web site, i suppose we all find out the hard way hey.

Hi David, sorry to hear that you are having problems this is the trouble with new breeds every one jumps on the band wagon know nothing about the breed or care just so long as they make some money, that is why most people will not buy from that mag, how do you know that you have the right pedigree? you will need to do some checking up of the dogs that you do have on the paper and then you can send off to the FIC/FCI  they are very helpful.

Don`y know if this will help, but pups have to be microchipped or tattooed before being registered in Spain.

Christine, Spain.

both my pups are micro chipped but i sorted that out myself, even when i went to pick my pup up the breeder had FORGOTTEN to have it vaccinated
