My 8 year old dog has started to eat his own poo.. anyone know why?
He's usually avery clean dog...
But when i went shopping the other day i found he had poo'd in the house and eaten it.. yuk
I know theres got to be a reason for it... so unlike him

If, as you say, this is a new thing I would be inclined to take him to the vet for a check up.
Has he done this at any other time or just the one occasion, are you sure it was poo and not vomit, sure you are but sometimes if it has been cleared it is difficult to tell.

When my dog was young she often ate her own poo when I left her this was due to separtion from me.  Could it be you just left him longer than normal?  Or most dogs are very clean animals and he could have been upset that he pooed where he lives and sleeps there for he would try to clean it up himself which would mean he would eat it, this is a common trait with dogs in kennels.  If the problem goes on I suggest feeding him pineapple as when it come out the other end it taste horriable to them and hopefully he will not eat it.

But Embo, this is an 8 year old dog that has just started doing it, bit odd if it has never been left whilst the owner did a bit of shopping before.

Thank you both for your input.... Murphy as far as i know hasnt done it before.. im almost certain it was poo and no vomit. I do leave my dogs 4 hours a day (4 days a week) while i work.
He's otherwise fit as a fiddle but i will take him at the first chance i get to the vet.
I suppose it could have been he was trying to clear it up before i got home... i did this ok :(
I was quite taken aback by murphy's pooing as he's been clean since he was 10 weeks and other than vomiting once he's never done anything. Altho having said that i recall my husband saying he thought murphy had poo'd and it had gone almost by the time he came back with cleaning materials.
Oh well lets see what Mr Vet says

Anytime my housetrained dogs have poo'd in the house I worm them.  It's worked every time for me.

i heard somewhere (don't know how true it is) that if a dog eats its own feases then its lacking something in the diet.

Glad to see charlie is still going strong

It is true, or so i have read, that it may be a lack of protein in the dogs diet.  Do you feed the dog..meat at any point?

Thanks for you replies... he has an appointment on Thursady (when charlie goes)
He does have meat in his diet infact i would have said he has a well balanced diet (but obviously not if he's lacking in something...)
