I have read in Dog World that "other" breeds can do this at Afghan meets; how do I get to know more about this. I have a dog that I am sure would love to do this! :D

Its now the end of the Afghan racing season, should start again about March. There are different locations. I know there are a couple in the Midlands area (Warwick and Hinkley) and there are a couple down South but now sure of their exact locations. If you have either Dog World or Our Dogs the events will be advertised on the Friday under the Afghan Breed notes before the meeting which is on a Sunday. Just phone the number given and they will be happy to help. You will not be allowed to run with the Affies but I think you can run with any other breed but you could always run you dog solo.

I used to race my Dobes at one of the Afghan meets, they throughly enjoyed it. The dogs must wear muzzles though unless racing alone or with only one owners dogs.
I had a bitch who could remove any muzzle, just put her chin on the floor, both feet behind her ears and took it off so we ended up racing her with a whippet who she did not have a chance of catching. This particular bitch also broke two strong collars (she was tied to my car at the time) in her excitement and determination to join in when other dogs were racing.
She qualified to go to an inter-area racing final but unfortunatly was pregnant at the time and could not compete.
If you get chance then go, the dogs really enjoy it

Erm... Sue, I remember certain Border terriers running with certain Afghans! I have video evidence to prove it, even if the Affie did do a right turn on the straight and dissappear!!!! :D:

I took my Affie racing and all the affies including many other breeds thoroughly enjoyed it. I took him to the one in Warwick and if I remember I got the details from an Afghan Website. If you search under google for Nottingham Afghan Training they have a message board and you can always ask (admin hope thats allowed) even if that is not in your area they are sure to know one near you. Even though there were a lot of Afghans there many other breeds including x breeds were racing and they all enjoyed it. I was made really welcome and had a great day.
p.s. If your dog is no good at recall better take some liver cake :)

Yes Dawn but then we were the owners of the said dogs and could do what we liked and the Affie was only a puppy!

I took my Whippet, Lurcher and Italian Greyhound to the Afghan racing at Hinckley and they LOVED it!!
My IG Norman actually did a faster time than many of the Afghans- 350yds in 24 seconds!
I planned to go back again, and to the racing at Warwick (where I believe it is for sighthounds only) but there was always something going on on the same day. Will definitely go again next year though!

Thank you all very much for your replies; sounds like fun! We shall endeavour to give it a bash!
Tks once more.

Tohme,
We used to race our Afghans at Aldershott and then at Reading. All breeds can join in, we used to race our Bichon against a Lasha Apso :D :D
Claire :)
