Henry has just started to cough in the last hour, and to me it sounded as though he had something stuck in his throat, and he was trying to cough it up.  It was really dry and hoarse, and hacking.  Was worried he may have had some of the toy 'slinky' stuck in his throat as the little bugger nicked the bairns toy and was chewing it in his hidey hole (his crate)
Anyway, he just coughed up a large globule of phlegm and hasn't coughed since he brought it up.  I gave him a drink of milk to ease his throat then.
What do you think this is/was all about??
Does it sound like he has a bad cough?
Does it sound as though he has had something stuck?
Or what????
Any help please?????????  He's got me worried.  :(
Oh yes, something else, he nicked another cigarette last night but only chewed at it...judging by the amount of tabacco lying on my bed, and the half chewed fag that was on the floor.(yes I think he is now addicted ;) )...could this be what the phlegm was all about, do you think??

Think Henry may have Kennel Cough.

But he's not been beside any other dog in which to catch Kennel Cough ??

Does not need to be can pick it up from the air or if someone walked through where an infected dog had brought up some mucus, it would be full of infection, and as you walked around the house it would be spread into the air.

Sorry to hear your woes but it does sound like a case of Kennel Cough. My puppy has just survived a bout and was originally showing the same symptoms as you described. I would advise taking him to see a Vet. Good luck!

Hi again...........just saw your last message and thought you might like to know that a a dog does not have to come into contact with another dog to catch kennel cough. There are two kinds, viral and bacterial, the latter can be passed on by humans just like a common cold!!

ok..that makes sense...and thanks for replying guys.........but my other dog Rocky is not coughing and he seems fit as a fiddle.
Henry seems to be ok one min, and then sinks down low....then the next min, he's back to his usual happy self.
Wouldn't Rox be showing signs of KC by now??

He may not even get it at all and it takes about 10 days before the infection shows and outward signs.

Well, I got up this morning and Rocky has coughed a few times :(

My sis took iin a little stray a couple of weeks ago.....happily tho', his owners turned up after a couple of days. 
I'm wondering if this dog had KC and I've picked it up and carried it in to my 2 ??

Yip, think a trip to the vet's is in order.  Was just there last week for Henry's poos.....<<sigh>>

I have Min my 13 yr old in a bad way at the moment :(

She started on Friday and was put on antibiotics and a powder on Monday to help bring up the Phlem and she is not improving as of yet :(

Touch wood the others seem to be fine.

Was at the vets with my new pup and 5yo daughter (off school with a cold). The vet asked why she wasn't at school and she said "I've got kennel cough and mummy's giving me dog medicine."

Sounds like kennel cough to me. Last year just one out of my three got it, no signs at all from the other two, but they are over 3 years older. 

Hello Clair, it sounds as if Henry just has Kennel Cough, but when an middle-aged or older dog starts coughing in a throat clearing sort of way, and the brings up small amounts of white frothy sputum, my first guess is heart failure. And to date I've usually been right :(

The primary sign of kennel cough is a dry- sounding, spasmodic cough caused by pathogens that induce inflammation of the trachea (windpipe) and bronchi (air passages into the lungs). At the end of a coughing spell, a dog will often retch and cough up a white foamy discharge.

Some dogs also develop conjunctivitis (inflammation of the membrane lining the eyelids), rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal mucous membrane), and a nasal discharge. Affected dogs usually remain active and alert and continue to eat well. But if you suspect your dog has kennel cough, isolate it from other dogs and call your veterinarian.

My five month old pup came down with it 14 days days ago and we're still fighting against it!!
