Our old lurcher was called Granny!!!:D.Sandra.

Granny - what an excellent name, was it a rough coated one ??

My familys lurcher is called Lily, it was a choice between Lily or Daisy (cos she is white) her name at Battersea was April.

How about Maggie May ??

My Lurcher Pup is called Snatch, I wanted to call him Kahn after the Tiger out of The Jungle Book as he is a light phase brindle, but my partner and daughter had other ideas.

We had a black masked gold Afghan called Khan, we called him Scooby at first but changed it to Khan, he certainly had the personality of Khan from the Jungle book

Claire,Granny was a smooth coated, whippet, saluki, grey cross. She used to get everybody coming to the door to take her out, even all the wee kids because she was so good,we live in the clyde valley so there were always loads of places to take her and she usually caught something, sadly we lost her age 11/12 to cancer, she used to always smile at us and all her pups were the same!:D Sandra.Even now everybody remembers her and some of her pups are still on the go,though rabbiting is a lost art now,and before all you animal lovers start on me,we always used what she caught and didn't do it just for fun,Sandra.

Hi,lurchers can be a mix of various things, you can get stag-grews,collie-grews,sal-grews,whippet-grews,but yes mainly all mixed with greyhounds. If you use saluki you have a bit of a daftie,so most only have a 1/4 sal in them,we use collies for the brains, whippets to keep the size down for rabbits and stags for the speed to catch deer.Granny was smallish but would still try for the deer, quite a sight, hope this helps,Sandra.

Do they all have wiry hair too?

They can have any type of hair (I assume ?) the most common is rough/broken (wiry) or smooth, often with feathering.  If you go to any country shows they often have lurcher shows, I was surprised at how many people attend these days and it is all taken quite seriously but in a friendly way and everyone is willing to talk to you and show their dogs to you - problem is you often get gypseys there trying to sell dogs to you  .  The last one we went to my dad was allowed to show a ladies dog he was chuffed to bits when it won but not so chuffed when the lady took it back off him for best in show :D :D

I didn't realise these shows were still popular, think I'll find one to go to,and take somebody's dog off them to show :D Sandra.

Im in the South and there are always loads down here in the summer (my parents haunt them on a regular basis  ) Now they have their own Lurcher I think my dad is hoping to show her but we dont know how true a Lurcher she is because we dont know what her dad was (she is from Battersea) I dont know if this matters in Lurcher circles - she certainly looks and acts like one - ok apart from her ears which sometimes go right over her head like a cows lick

I have a 1/2 Saluki, quarter greyhound, quarter collie (flo-jo) she's 13 months old & not a bit daft, in fact she is much cleverer than my Bedlington whippet...

Geoff :)
