Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Is it ok if we leave our 2 puppies alone
- By aceskrbabe16 [us] Date 09.12.03 18:04 UTC
Hello,
I am concerned on leaving our puppies alone all day and all night. My parents are taking us to a play downtown at 3:45 pm. We wont be home until about 9:30pm. (5.45 hrs)  But we work all day too. I am getting off early at 230 making myself be home by 3pm and play with them for 45 minutes before we have to leave......again.  They stay in the garage they have toys and a big soft chair in there. They are 14 weeks old, mastiff/lab/sheppard mix both sisters. Please help put my mind at ease! Thank you!!

Hiya, yes they will be fine go and enjoy your selves!!!!!!!
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 09.12.03 18:07 UTC
Who will feed them and check they are ok.
- By aceskrbabe16 [us] Date 09.12.03 18:11 UTC
I will feed them right before we leave. Normally they will eat if they are hungry, and if not they will leave the food alone until they are hungry. No one will be there to check on them but I will have the T.V. on for some voices..

Think I have this right, 3.45 pm to 9.45 pm if that is correct no problem, but that is not all day and all night?
- By aceskrbabe16 [us] Date 09.12.03 18:26 UTC
I meant I am working from 8am to 2:30pm getting home by 3pm for the pups and play with them for 45 mins and leave them again at 3.45 to around 9ish.

Hi, if you start work 8am that would mean you leave home 7.30am? Back home at 9pm ish=13+1/2hrs with approx 45mins play time in between?
14wk old pups are way too young to leave alone for that length of time, you have every reason to be concerned, I would be too & don`t think anyone can put your mind at ease.

Sorry, but I wouldn't leave them in these circumstances either.  Is there no-one who could come round to your house to pup sit, or a friend/relative who could take them?  I don't think you'd enjoy your night out if you were sat there worrying the whole time, so it would make for a much more enjoyable time if you could set your mind at rest by making some arrangement for them :)

Can you arrange for anyone to come in at any time during these hours, even if just for an hour or so? Is there anyone who would look after them for you?
- By lucyandmeg [gb] Date 09.12.03 19:14 UTC
L.F. you must have been reading my mind!! ;-)
- By aceskrbabe16 [us] Date 09.12.03 19:27 UTC
Oh boy.... I leave work at 8am so I start at 830am leave at 230pm (just for today, my husband normally gets home at that time anyway) ahh I am trying to find someone who can come to play with the pups..  but everyone's got plans and they got to work tomorrow! Oh man... I am asking my parents why so early and why so late! HA! I know I feel so bad for them! But its only for one day! Im feeling so guilty! They're my babies!
- By claresanders [gb] Date 09.12.03 19:40 UTC
they will be abolutely fine if you leave plenty of food, water, toys and paper down to do thir buiness, plus you will let them out for a bit, i there any chance you could finish work so you had about an hour and half with them, If you work all day anyway they will be ued to occupying theirselves, they will probably sleep all day :) dont worry, go out and hav a good time i am ure you will make it up too them when you get home :)

just becaue you have dog dont mean you cant go out once in a while, it is not healthy for a dog to be that needy that you cant leave them alone for more than an hour, at the end of th day they are wild animals not children, thy will look after theirselves while you are out :)

have a nice time

lov clare :)

Thank you and yes yes yes yes I def will make it up to them when we get home!! I will smother them with all my love and give them the back yard to play and chase eachother! Thank you! You made my day! Lol

Hi,
I would be concerned about leaving 2 14 week old puppies alone for that long.

We have 2 puppies and there is no way I would leave them for that long. They will be so bored with no stimulation.

Is your garage heated??

Sorry to be harsh but I don't know why people have dogs if they aren't hardly there for them.
- By claresanders [gb] Date 09.12.03 20:03 UTC
hello

can you not read she said it was for ONE day not all the time...........get a grip
- By ROSIEDOLLYJAZ [gb] Date 10.12.03 00:09 UTC
YES, I can read and even a day on it's own is a long time!!!!

I hope she has a nice time and I know it's nice to have a break but personally I wouldn't do it and I think there would be a lot of people who would say the same thing!!
- By claresanders [gb] Date 09.12.03 20:02 UTC
glad to help, alot of pople on here just want to come across as the prodigel dog owner, but alot of people in all sorts of circumstances own dogs, i mean, it is for one day for gods sake, i know the hell a puppy can be and the time away is a god send, but you always love them more when you get home
- By Lokis mum [gb] Date 09.12.03 20:52 UTC
If it's just for the one day, I cannot see that you have a problem:  if you do intend to leave them each day from 8.a.m. til 3, on a regular basis, personally, I would try and get a puppy sitter/walker :  although with the two of them they do have each other to play with, the downside is that they will bond more with each other than with you - it does make training them that much more difficult.

But anyway - it sounds as if your parents want to "treat" you - so go on - enjoy yourselves for once!

Regards
Margot

Who looks after them during the day? Can't you get them to come back on the night?
Have a good time anyway, we are going to the lka this Saturday and i've had to beg my dad to dog sit lol, seeing as last time our dog jumped up at the door when he nipped out and she knocked the catch and locked him out :D

Thank you guys for all your feedback, I am feeling better now about leaving them for ONE day! ONLY ONE!! It is going to be hard but again, yes they have eachother and they have everything that they need in the garage! We are making them a doggie door leading out to the back yard so they can go out whenever they want and in during the day! Thank you all!!!!!!!! :-)

anyone would think your leaving them shut outside in torrential rain for gods sake, its one night peeps chill! stop making the lady feel guilty!

enjoy your evening its nice to be treated!
- By dollface Date 10.12.03 01:35 UTC
Ya I say go and have fun..Even if you did this lets say twice a month or so people still need to live a little and enjoy them selves :) Go have a great time and enjoy yourself, your pups will be fine they may seem like our children but they are not human. They probably won't even realize it has been that long anyhow, and they will be very happy to see you when you get back :)

Hi guys!
It was a great evening but of course I worried a bit! I couldnt wait until we got home so I could rescue my babies! They were FINE! I felt silly after all! When I got home I put all my effort into playing with them for 2 hours (until they got tired) lol... Thank you everyone!
