Hi A few weeks ago I read with interest a post  about the dreaded 'Poo Munching'. I know the proper word but can't spell it :o  One of my older Labs does this and unfortunately has taught my youngster that it's a good way of getting an extra meal. As soon as I spot someone pooing I run outside and grab it, so quick that they have now learnt to get it 'straight out of the oven' before I spoil their plan. Geoff was one of the people that recommended Pineapple, so I have bought a very large can of P.A in natural juice, liquidised it and have been adding it to everyones meal religiously for the last 7 days but the upshot is.. It's just not working. I would presume it would be an almost instant cure if it would put them off.?  or would anyone suggest 'perseverance with PA, Brewers Yeast, Deter (have not tried these yet)  run faster or change breed :)  :)

we had the same prob with our cavalier who learned that in order to get it she had to turn round and eat it while she was doing it....lol by the way we tried absolutely everything, the tuff to give to make it taste bitter, sprinkling pepper on it absoloutely nothing worked :)

As I understand it there can be several reasons *why* a dog does this - you need to find the reason before you can apply an appropriate 'cure'.  For some dogs it's a health problem - down to a lack of vital bacteria in the gut, and they will seek to replace it with 'left overs' from somebody elses.  The cure for this would be natural youghurt.  For some it's a lack of ammino acids - pineapple or courgette or meat teneriser added to the dogs meal will help.  Sometimes it's a training issue - caused by owners showing displeasure at the dog (often on returning from being out) so the dog is trying to destroy the 'evidence' - this can be the hardest to cure as it has become a habit that can also be self rewarding (see following reason) - clicker training can help, but it has to be consistant.  There can also be a dietary reason - too much food (so the waste is passed out and appears still appetising) or a diet too rich in protein (which gives the same results - a taste 'poo pie'......) in which case the diet needs changing.....

Eating poo is natural for dogs.   They like the taste - most of the time that is the only reason why they do it.

Try Pineapple chunks out of a tin thats what i find works, my friend had this problem a while ago and it aslo worked for her.

I just added half a pineapple ring to dogs dinner & it did the trick....

I would definitely recommend trying 'Deter'.  It seems to do the trick on all the copraphagic dogs at work.  You just can't stop them eating other dogs poo, which is the problem!

Thanks everyone for sound advise. I think it may be starting to work, perhaps it is best left in chunks then. I do think that they do it out of habit tho', I think it is cos they are gutty pigs rather than lacking something and the youngster has definitely learnt it from the older girl. I did experience what you said Digger with one of my girls doing it indoors, then trying to hide it under the Turtle Mat or consume it. They have good old fashioned green tripe with complete mixer and now lashings of PAs but as of dinner time tomorrow I will give them chunks or rings.   I used to think it's a dogs life but not so sure anymore, it is just so disgusting :)

I used to give the chunks or rings to mine & it worked, only thing was after a while it they did become used to it. Think it took a few dys to kick in as well.

my 5 month old puppy lab doesent touch dogs poo, but eats cats poo, think i will try the pinapple chunks aswell.
