Dizzy Blond came home yesterday and was great :) Waited 3 hours in her cage during the journey before she could get out for a pee. Then had a bit of a yukky poo :(

This morning she woke us up howling to get out so out she goes and wees straight away :D Very good thinks I, this should be esier than I thought...

or not.

Since then she is almost contantly trying to wee. A couple of times we've had little puddles on the floor but I'm not worried about those it's like she's straining and only getting a couple of drips out. Is she scenting the place (garden is getting lots of these drips too) or do you think she might have a bladder infection from holding it for so long yesterday?

Any advise please :)

ALSO: when she's sleeping she seems very 'shakey'. Do you think this is just stress and should settle down? She ate last night but refused breakfast :(

Hi Nikki

A puppy quivering when it first goes to sleep is not unusual, you often see it in a litter and I don't think it is because they are cold or they would he huddled up together - if it continues then it may be cold so circle a towel around her to snuggle up to.

If she is constantly trying to wee then this does not sound right - I imagine you are taking her to the vet tomorrow for her "new puppy" check up so I would try to collect some in a clean container to take with you.  Three hours of "holding it" should not cause an infection.

Puppies often don't eat much for the first few days in a new home which is why owners frequently start to try to tempt them with lots of different foods.  Just put the food that she has been having down and she should eat when she settles down and gets hungry, she should drink during this time though.  If she totally refuses all food for over 16 hours or has D & V then a vet visit is called for.

I'm making sure there's always water for her and she is drinking plenty :)

She's leaving us puddles but then she's crouching and almost straining until she expells a couple of drops literally then she moves on to do it somewhere else

She will be at the vets tomorrow for her first check and maybe her injections... It's like being a first time mum all over again

Wandering if she's maybe trying to poo?

She hasn't 'been' since last thing last night when she had a loose motion.

She wouldn't still need stimulated would she?

it sounds like she may have an infection, try cranberry juice (like us women) our vet recommended it or the herbal tablets after ours was spayed.
As for sleeping you ain't seen nothing yet!! They run, play, fight in their sleep and talk :D just make sure they are not in bed with you at the same time!! I'm often covered in scratches from a wandering paw!

Don't forget to take her to the vets though because she will probably need an antibiotic like Cephalexin.

Sarah
Oh the trials of dog ownership ! ;)

Hows she doing now? Definitely get the vet to check her. They do wee a lot, Willis weed all the time when a puppy... and he would walk when doing it...dribbling round the front room

Thankfully...he's stopped it now  :D

:) She's sleepng lots - thank heavens cos that boat has left me feeling queasy

She seems happy enough and is eating without a problem, just a bit worried about this 'dribbling'

Good job Willis has stopped now - that could be messy ;)

indeed...one could easily drown

You can be constipated and still pass a loose motion, then - nothing else.  I assume you are watching her, where are the drips coming from?

If from her bottom and you have anything like zinc and castor oil cream (for babies nappy rash etc) then dip a cotton bud in it and put this around the entrance to her bottom, not inside or you could damage her.  This *may* help.

If she is trying to wee constantly then ring vet for advice, in an adult I would wait but pups can go down hill too fast if there is something wrong and it is not worth the risk of waiting.

Hi Wishfairy

Just to let you know that Cam sometimes went a bit 'shakey' before he fell asleep. He still does it now and then, even though he's eight months.  He's always been fine tho, but if you ever find out what it is, let me know!

I know this sounds really disgusting but : In girls/women the uretha and the 'bum' are very close together my daughter is incontinent and has frequent infections. If she has a bladder infection she will most definitely be constipated ( because children will often wipe themselves front to back transfering germs from one to the other, unsure why it happens in dogs maybe they wipe the wrong way too ;) )
If she is constipated all you are getting out is the ..... erm is loose motions but the blockage is still there.
So once you sort the bladder out the bowels will follow suit.

Sarah
Hope you get what i mean as i struggle at times lol :)

edit:actually thats wrong children wipe back to front don't they? ohhh i give up!

lol - I know what you mean ;)

Well the vet looked at her this morning and said that it sounds like she might have the starts of an infection so she's on antibiotics. He also said that it could be a muscle weakness and we'd have to watch to make sure it cleared up  I imagine an incontinent Dane would be a real pain  In saying that I think if she were incontinent she wouldn't 'crouch' she'd just wee without knowing it. She also had fleas but everything else seemed what he would expect.

I did want to ask him a couple of questions but when he asked 'what kind of dog is that?' I decided that the champ doggers would probably know more!

She's a little swollen around the back end - almost like she's going to have testicles drop :o Normal or worrying?

Sometimes when she walks she lifts her back legs really high like she's marching (looks funny) then she falls over  I asked him to check her hips and he said that they aren't popping or looser than any other pups but the only real way to tell would be xray them... is she just being Dizzy? It's been so long since I had a little puppy in the house I can't remember how steady they should be on their feet and with her being a Dane and looking so much bigger it's hard to remember she's really very young - not even 8 weeks untill Friday :)

Hiya i'm glad she is sorted with the infection! I hope it isn't muscle weakness and hopefully when it clears up she will be fine! :)
With regards to lifting her legs and falling over, in our girl she was exceptionally clumsy and i had never seen a dog like this before and i was worried too so a quick call to the breeder reassured me. Quite simply they are finding their feet, mainly their back legs lol don't seem to follow the front so often and she used to fall on her bum. Once they age a bit more they get more confidence and co-ordination and our girl is fine now still clumsy but only with her tail (which i may add is lethal to a 4yr old, same height as their heads lol)

Good luck and don't forget to send me a pic!!

:D Now the infection is cleared up she's actually quite good at letting us know she wants to go... things are looking hopeful on the housetraining front :)

Mygirl can I ask if yours stood on the front toes when she was little? Dizzy seems to be doing this a LOT particularly on one leg and it's a little worrying   She seems unable to straighten her 'knee' (or is it wrist?) and as a result stands on her toes, then they sort of twist.

I've emailed her breeder and I'm hoping it's just a growing puppy thing but I can't help but worry :(
- By mygirl [gb] Date 11.12.03 00:24 UTC
Sorry wishfairy only just noticed your question and to be honest i can't remember, hopefully your breeder should email you back or just mention it next time in the vets. Unless anyone here has any thoughts!! (I do remember looking and thinking she had chunky 'knees' but with growth they 'slim' out! or go in proportion)
Glad the infection has cleared up anyway, you can get out in the cold now and housetrain the dog ;)

p.s Is it the elbow? Jeez i need to brush up abit!
