Ring at the door last night - hubby answers it - two girls about ten (with older brother ) singing carols  :(

Hubby told them it was far too early and to get lost. Is this the new 'Trick or Treat' ? I hope not :(

Hi Scrooge :D send them up to me at Manic Mansions. Id love to have carol singers at my door with their wee woolly hats and shiny little faces. And to watch the shiny little faces turn thunderous when they receive a chocolate coin or 2 for their music! :D

Marvellous isn't it?? All year loving parents tell their wee ones not to approach strangers or wander about in the dark away from home, then at Christmas time (or Halloween, or Nov 5th) they send them out in the dark to knock on strangers' doors  no thought as to what could happen, cos magically at this time they're protected by the Christmas Fairy   "AWW how sweet.  Come inside little children, have a piece of gingerbread......"  Whats wrong with these people!!!

I don't mind if it's a group who have thought it out a bit and are collecting for something and are singing properly :) This had the flavour of 'How can we make a quick bit of money - I know we'll knock on a few doors and sing something' - perhaps egged on by older brother :(

I love a proper group of carol singers (I used to go singing myself as a teenager with a youth group) - unfortunately we don't get them round our way, more's the pity :)

Don't get me wrong - I'll give quite happily to charity if it's a proper group, singing properly (as well as they are able - doesn't have to be a choir :) ). As others have said it does worry me about children going round just knocking on doors - that's why I don't agree with Trick or Treating.

Merry Xmas :)

More carol singers :( - this time three 12/13 year olds. Apart from a local church group which came round about 10/15 years ago, we have never (in 20 years) had carol singers - now we have had two lots of kids in 4 days. I told them to come back nearer Christmas. They said they were collecting for charity.

What shall I do if more call ? I have no objection to giving them money and I'd like to encourage them if they are genuinely collecting - but how do I know ?

Oh dear :(

Genuine charity collectors will have a recognised charity box with a label on it saying to whom it was issued and a number.  If they do not have one of these then I am afraid they are usually just glorified beggars who sing the first two lines, usuallly rather badly, in the hope that you will dole out some dosh.

Do not be emotionally blackmailed by these people.
