Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / lab pup biting visitors

My 5 month old lab pup has always got excited when visitors come in,but now she is biting them, especially ones she hasn't met before,or hasn't seen in a while. She bites their shoes, trouser legs, and when they put her down or tell her off,she jumps up and bites their hands, arms or anything she can reach.Sometimes the attack comes out of nowhere, she just all of a sudden launches herself at them, and bites. She does this to us too, especially when she is tired.I always have to put her out of the room when we have visitors, and as soon as she is allowed in,she starts all over again.I tell everyone to ignore her when she jumps up,but she is very persistent. It's the kids I am concerned about,as she does this to them too.I have always had GSD's and none of them were as bad as this when they were pups. They jumped up initially, but didn't bite, and soon calmed down, but she is a little minx who hates being told off.It has got to the stage where i dread people coming in because of her behaviour. What else can I do? apart from putting her out of the room, which defeats the purpose,as she is never going to learn how to behave with visitors if she is always isolated from them

Hi

I have a newfie pup and although she doesnt bite she does get very excited when visitors come, I have started using a clicker and treats when people arrive. As soon as she sees the clicker she knows she is going to get some treats and I have found that if I get her to sit using clicker and treats then ask the guests to very gently fuss her while she is sitting (all the time giving treats and clicking if she is sitting) she calms down a lot sooner. You could try this while your lab pup is on a lead so if it does go to bite someone you can pull it away and you have more control.

When people visit put her on a lead, so at least you have control. Then step up on the sit/stay command and hopefully she will come round, it sounds like she is doing the giddy puppy act :D
